Akinwunmi Ambode was born on 14 June, 1963 in Epe LGA, Lagos State. He was born to the family of Late Mr. Festus Akinwale Ambode and Mrs. Christianah Oluleye Ambode. He is one out of the ten children of his parents and he attended St Jude’s Primary School, Ebutte Meta, Lagos in 1969.
He sat for the National Common Entrance Examination in 1974 and gained admission into Federal Government College, Warri. In 1981, He completed his Ordinary and Advanced Level with distinction and second best result in West Africa at the Higher School Certificate Exams.
He played Hockey and Cricket while in secondary school and was part of the then Bendel State Cricket team. He gained admission into University of Lagos where he read accounting and graduated in 1984. He served in the Central Bank of Nigeria in Sokoto, Sokoto State.
Akinwunmi was employed by the Lagos State Waste Disposal Board as an Accountant Grade II. By 1987, he had passed the Institute of Chatered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) exams. He had also completed his Master’s Degree programme in Accounting under a Federal Government Scholarship.
In 1988, he was appointed Assistant Treasurer of Badagry Local Government Area. He was later posted to Shomolu LGA as Auditor in 1991. From Shomolu LGA he was posted to Mushin LGA as Council Treasurer. After working at many LGAs over a period of 10 years, he was awarded the US Fulbright Scholarship for Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program at Boston University, Massachusetts, USA in 1998.
After the fellowship programme, he became the acting Auditor General for Local Government in Lagos in 2001. In January 2005, he became the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Finance and by February 2006, he was given added responsibility of accountant general of Lagos State, which placed him in charge of all financial activities of the state and directly responsible for over 1,400 accountants in state service. During his six year appointment as the Lagos State accountant general, the state’s financial performance improved visibly with the budget performing at an average of 85% annually.
He is a very active member of the Federal Government College, Warri Old Students Association (FEGOCOWOSA). After 27 years in the civil service, he retired voluntarily in August 2012. He founded Brandsmiths Consulting Limited to provide Public Finance and Management Consulting services to government at all levels, its parastatals and agencies. He also founded the La Roche Leadership Foundation in 2012, a non-profit organization with the mandate of developing educational and leadership skills of young Nigerians.
He is a Christian and also actively involved in politics and is the current Governor of Lagos State under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) party.
Akinwunmi is married to Bolanle Patience Ambode and they are blessed with three children(twin boys and a girl).
