  • Who is BNXN?

As we stated in the introductory paragraph, BNXN was formerly known by his stage name Buju, an acronym for Beauty Underneath Just Understood. He was also known by Bujutoyour ears, however, last year, that’s 2022, he changed his stage name to BNXN because he was mostly mistaken for Buju Banton, the Jamaican reggae artist.

The new stage name BNXN, is the same pronunciation as his surname ‘Benson’, as his real name is Daniel Benson. Let’s explore his early life in the next paragraph.

  • Early Life of BNXN

Daniel Benson is from Akwa Ibom State, precisely Nsit Ibom local government area, as that’s where his father, Mr. Benson is from. He was born on May 17, 1997, in Lagos State, and spent his childhood days growing up in the Gbagada district before his family relocated to Mowe in Ogun State years later. His father was an avid music lover who had collections ranging from dancehall to afrobeats and reggae, and this contributed to his son’s interest in music at an early age.

As a junior secondary student of Emerald Ridge High School, BNXN started writing music, but at that time he went by the name Drizzle. Aside from songwriting, he was also rapping in school, and also joined his church choir. Later on, as he approached the end of his secondary school education, young BNXN was doing solo performances at valedictory services.

  •  Music Career of BNXN

As we’ve stated earlier in this article, BNXN’s interest in music was right from his secondary school days, however, after secondary school, he kind of lost interest in music following the death of his mother to cancer. But as a student of Theatre Arts at Babcock University in Ogun State, his interest in music was rekindled again in 2017 while he was on Industrial Training attachment. Burna Boy, Buju Banton, Damian Marley, J Hus and 9ice were some of the musicians that influenced his interest in music.

To cope with the stress of the job in his place of IT attachment, BNXN began writing songs once again and freestyling. He continued doing these things until he got suspended by his place of IT attachment. This made him more involved in music than ever. BNXN began his music career as a Soundcloud artist, and then he was known as Buju or Bujutoyourears. His first song, which was titled Catch A Vibe, was released in February 2018. Then, a few months after, he released another song titled A Day in Lagos, which gained massive recognition on Soundcloud and the Nigerian Twitter cyberspace.

With the recognition that ‘A Day in Lagos’ that BNXN (then Buju) enjoyed, his fans began clamouring for a collaboration with Zlatan Ibile as they felt he would be a perfect fit for BNXN’s style of music. And in the months that followed, more fans continued to push for a collaboration between BNXN and Zlatan Ibile. By 2019, Zlatan reached out to BNXN and offered to collaborate with him for free. This led to the release of ‘Spiritual’, a song in which BNXN featured Zlatan. This was the beginning of BNXN’s popularity in the music scene, albeit still limited at that time.

BNXN released his first extended play project (EP) titled To Your Ears in 2019, featuring two songs named ‘Lenu’ and ‘Ohema’. The ‘Lenu’ soon gained massive airplay on radio stations, clubs and entertainment spots across the country. It was on such occasions that Burna Boy heard the song while in the club, and instantly loved it, asking the disc jockey (DJ) to repeat the song several times. In 2020, Burna Boy then reached out to BNXN and offered him a one-year record deal with Spaceship Records so he could be on the remix of Lenu. This alliance brought about the remix of Lenu, in which Burna Boy was featured, and the song was a national hit. By 2021, BNXN’s contract with Spaceship Records came to an end.

After leaving Spaceship Records in 2021, BNXN formed his record label which he called To Your Ears Entertainment. He released several singles in 2021 via his label that enjoyed nationwide recognition such as Testimony and Outside, to name a few.
