  • Early Life 

Reminisce’s real name is Remilekun Abdulkhalid Safaru, and he was born in Kaduna State on January 26, 1981. He hails from Ajilete, Yewa South local government area, in Ogun State. 

As a young boy in elementary and secondary school, Reminisce was fond of listening to songs across various genres, both local and foreign. His interest in music spurred him to perform in multiple school activities during his secondary school days. After obtaining his Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) upon completion of his secondary school education, Reminisce applied to study Purchasing and Supply at Kwara State Polytechnic, Kwara State.

  • Music Career

In 2006, when Reminisce was a student at Kwara State Polytechnic, he recorded a hardcore album with ID Cabassa’s Coded Tunes studio, however, the album never got released. In 2008, Reminisce was enlisted by 9ice to perform a rap verse on Bachelor’s Life, a track off the Gonga Aso album. Shortly after, Reminisce released his first single, titled Ever Since, which featured 9ice. The song was all about Reminisce’s life up till that moment. Later on, he released his second song titled, If Only, which Dtunez produced. 

Reminisce was then signed to EDGS Records, a record label jointly owned by Ibrahim Okulaja and JahBless. By 2012, Reminisce dropped his first studio album, Book of Rap Stories, which he began recording in 2010. The 13-track album was produced by Sarz, Legendury Beatz, Joshbeatz, Jospo, and Pastorchild, with guest appearances from 9ice, Dagrin, XP, Ruggedman, Minjin, Patoranking, Jospo, and JahBless. Some songs off the album include Bisi My Lover, Caro, Bye Bye, Kako Bi Chicken, Gabe, and Ever Since. The album was widely successful across the southwestern region of Nigeria. 

A year after his debut album, Reminisce released his second studio album titled Alaga Ibile, in 2013. The album, which contained 16 tracks, was produced by Jospo, Sossick, Sarz, Chopstix, Deevee, and Shizzi. Eight artists, including Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido Olamide, Endia, Naeto C, Obadice, and Sossick, were featured on this album. The album recorded over a million copies sold before the end of 2014. Reminisce’s improvement over the years earned him a spot in Times Magazine’s 2014 list of “World Rappers You Should Meet”. 

On April 30, 2015, Reminisce released his third studio album titled Baba Hafusa, which critics described as a ” genre-busting album” for its fusion of Fuji, Hip-Hop, and Afrobeats. Baba Hafusa featured artists such as Phyno, Olamide, Vector, Ice Prince, Sojay, and Sean Tizzle, with Tyrone, Young John, D’Tunes, Jospo, Chopstix, Sarz, Camo Blaizz, Kimzbeatz and Sossick as producers. Three weeks later, on May 18, 2015, the album reached number 12 on the Billboard World Music Album charts, making Reminisce the first hip-hop artist in Africa to have an album debut on the Billboard World Music category. Some songs off the album include Local Rappers, Baba Hafusa, Grind, Skilashi, Gbamilago, and Alagbara. The song Local Rappers, which featured Olamide and Phyno won the Best Collabo category of The Headies 2015 edition and was also nominated for the Best Rap Single for The Headies 2015 edition. 

El Hadj, Reminisce’s fourth studio album was released in August 2016, and it had 2Face, 9ice, Olamide, Ice Prince, Solidstar, Seriki, Mr. Eazi, Sojay, Terry Apala, and Oladips, as featured artists. The album consisted of 17 songs including Asamalekun, Where I Come From, Ibadi, Konsignment, If E No Be God, 1.4.D.R (One for the Road), Ori, I Remember, Skit, Telephone, Simple Boy, Daily Basic, Nobody Knows Tomorrow, Owofe, Oloun, Larger Than Life, and Feego. 

During the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria, Reminisce released an EP titled Vibes and Insha Allah, in July 2020. This EP contained six songs including Vibes, Jogodo, Ogaranya, Eja Osan, Gbedu, and Over 2.5. Fireboy DML, Fatima Safaru, and Tiwa Savage were enlisted as guest artists, while TMXO, Krizbeatz, Sarz, and other producers completed the production of the EP. The EP enjoyed massive streams across multiple music streaming platforms, and by November 2020 over 4.5 million streams had been recorded on Audiomack. 

As an indigenous rapper, Reminisce raps mostly in his native Yoruba dialect, adding English language and Pidgin in some songs.
