Early Life and Education of Oxlade
Oxlade was born Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman on May 21, 1997. He was born in Surulere, Lagos State where he had his elementary and secondary school education. As a young child, Oxlade began singing and drumming in school, and at 11, with the help of his uncle who was a sound engineer, he recorded his first demo. This encouraged his desire to build a career in music in the future. Even after getting into Lagos State University (LASU) to study History and International Relations after had completed his secondary school education, Oxlade dropped out in the second year to pursue a career in music. This decision to leave the university for music didn’t sit well with Oxlade’s father who was a lecturer at LASU. As a result, Oxlade was cut off from receiving any stipends from his father.

Music Career of Oxlade
After leaving LASU to pursue music, in 2018, Oxlade was featured on Mamiwota, a single off Blaqbonez’s Bad Boy Blaq EP. His verse on Mamiwota got him a minor breakthrough in the industry, enough to attract the attention of A&R executive Bizzle Osikoya. Bizzle met up with Oxlade, offering him a management deal with The Plug, to which Oxlade agreed. Afterward, Oxlade signed a publishing, licensing, and distribution deal with The Plug Entertainment and a record deal with Troniq Music.
Oxlade caught his big break when he released Away on March 20, 2020, as the lead single for his Oxygene EP which would be released a week later. The song was produced by Spax and released through The Plug Entertainment. Away received massive airplay across the country with critics praising the simplicity of the lyrics and the song beat. The song peaked at the number 2 position on Apple Music in Nigeria and number 23 on the TurnTable Yearly Top 50 charts by December 30, 2020. Away earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s list of “50 Best Songs of 2020”.
On March 27, 2020, a week after the release of its lead single Away, Oxlade dropped the Oxygene AP, through Troniq Music and The Plug Entertainment. The EP contained six tracks which were produced by Dera, Echo, Lussh, and others. The opening track of the album titled 02, cleared the air on Oxlade’s vocal dexterity and smoothness of his range while delivering an emotional and honest love song. Other tracks on the EP include Hold On, Kokose, Away, Tables Turn which featured Moelogo, and Weakness.
After the Oxygene EP, Oxlade released DKT independently on September 2, 2020. At the turn of 2021, Oxlade collaborated with Dolapo and Ms. Banks on their song Interest. Interest peaked at number 11 on the Captial Xtra Airplay chart on February 18, 2021, making it Oxlade’s first entry on that chart. The song, Interest, also earned Oxlade his first career entry on the UK Afrobeat Single Chart, at the number 10 position, and remaining on the chart for twelve consecutive weeks. Another major collaboration of Oxlade in 2021 was when he was featured on Kolo, a song in which Ice Prince was the lead artist. Kolo earned massive airplay and positive reviews from critics and fans alike, both in Nigeria and beyond.
In October 2021, Oxlade released Ojuju, as the lead single of the Eclipse EP which was released later that year. The song, Ojuju, also earned a spot on UK Afrobeats Singles Chart, making it Oxlade’s second entry on the UK Afrobeats Singles chart. At Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50 weekly chart of the week of September 3, 2021, Ojuju peaked at number 11. Later on, on August 20, 2021, the DJ Coublon-produced Eclipse EP was released through Troniq Music and Epic Records, France. It contained four tracks including More, Ojuju, Pay Me, and Incomplete.
On March 10, 2022, Oxlade signed a new deal with Columbia Record UK. A week later, Oxlade released Want You, a single which was produced by TMXO and mixed by Spax. By early June 2022, Oxlade dropped Ku Lo Sa, which would go be become a massive hit in Nigeria. The song did well on several music charts, in Nigeria and abroad. Toward the end of 2022, Oxlade released the remix of Ku Lo Sa, which featured Camilla Cabello. Ku Lo Sa remix is still making waves in Nigeria and other countries of the world.
