Ever since signing on to Wizkid’s record label in 2018, Terri has become one of the fast-rising Nigerian artists known for several hit songs, such as Ojoro and Bia.   • Early Life and Education

Terri’s real name is Terry Daniel Akewe. He is an indigene of Edo State but was born and raised in Lagos, particularly Ifako-Ijaye. Terri is the first of four children born on May 27, 1999. Terri obtained his nursery, primary, and secondary school education in the Ifako-Ijaiye area of Lagos State. 

After he completed his secondary school education, Terri proceeded to the University of Lagos to study Marine Insurance. However, it was during that time that Terri decided to pursue a career in music. So, he dropped out of UNILAG just weeks after he had started his undergraduate program. Terri has, in recent interviews, mentioned his plans of still going back to school soon to obtain a degree in a business-related course.

  • Terri’s Music Career

As a teenager, Terri enjoyed singing amongst his peers in school. This he did mainly to gain attention from the girls. The more he sang for attention, he noticed that some people began taking his singing seriously. So, he started saving up his pocket money for recording sessions. By 13 years, Terri had started recording music, going by the stage name Stoned Teezy. 

As an amateur singer, Terri released several singles such as Where the Party at? which featured Fresh and Remy Martin. He even released a 5-track extended playlist titled Outchea. Later on, he began making covers of popular Afrobeats hits and shared them on social media platforms. And little by little, he started getting noticed. 

At the age of 17 years, Terri decided to pursue a career in music wholeheartedly. To focus on music squarely he dropped out from the University of Lagos in 2017. Without the distraction of his academics, Terri did more and more covers of popular hits. One such cover he did was Oshe, a song by Wizkid and DJ Jimmy Jatt, which he shared on his social media pages. 

The cover of Oshe which Terri shared on social media in December 2017 gained traction online. The viral nature of Terri’s rendition of Oshe caught the attention of Wizkid in January 2018. Pleased with the talent of Terri, Wizkid sent Mut4y, the Head of Music of Starboy Entertainment, to meet with Terri. By the first week of February 2018, Terri was offered a record deal with Wizkid’s Starboy Entertainment. 

After just two weeks of being signed to Starboy Entertainment, Wizkid teamed up with Terri, Spotless, and Ceeza Milli on Soco. Soco was released on February 21, 2018, and it became an instant hit song across the country and beyond. The song enjoyed massive airplay on radio and television, which in turn introduced Terri, Spotless, and Ceeza Milli into the Nigerian music scene. Aside from the popularity Soco enjoyed in the streets, it also earned an award for the ‘best collaboration’ category at the 2019 Sound City MVP Awards. 

Following the success of Soco, Terri released his debut single through Starboy Entertainment, titled Bia in September 2018. Bia was well-received by fans and music critics alike, which further increased Terri’s audience. Later on, in 2018, Terri dropped Shuu. And the song became a hit. In 2019, Terri’s dedication did not wane and he went on to several songs such as On Me, Same You, and Turn on Me. He also featured King Perry and Soft in Jojo, a song that performed extremely well. 

In 2020, he released Ojoro, a single that went on to top music charts and gain widespread popularity across the country. Later that same year, Terri dropped his first body of work through the record label titled Afro Series. Afro Series was an EP that contained 7 tracks with no assistance from any guest artists. However, some award-winning producers such as Killertunes, Tuzi, Lambeats, Sarz, and Blaise were responsible for the production. The songs included in the EP were Wake Up, My Chest, Doo, Ojoro, Ode, Kill Man, and Balance.  

After the Afro Series EP, Terri released songs like Come Around, Danger, and Money. And two years after his first body of work, Terri dropped another extended project titled In Transit on April 22, 2022.  The In Transit EP contained 6 tracks with guest appearances from Mugeez and BNXN. The songs included were Danger, Holy Water, Wanna Know, For Here, No Lie, and Chargie featuring Mugeez.
