Chiege Alisigwe is a talented Nollywood actress. She is popularly known for her role in the movie, My love where she featured alongside Ramsey Nouah.

Early life & Education

Chiege Alisigwe hails from Umueshigwe in Orlu in Imo State but she grew up in Enugu.

The actress revealed that her parents were quite strict when she was growing up but she’s grateful to them for it although she didn’t like it back then.

She had her primary and secondary school education in Enugu. Chiege attended Queens School Enugu where she was a member of the Dramatic Society.

After she left secondary school in 1996, while waiting for her JAMB result, she got introduced into Nollywood by a family friend.

Chiege later enrolled at the Institute of Management and Technology in Enugu where she studied Fine and Applied Arts. Chiege completed her National Youth Service Corps in 2006.

Career

Chiege Alisigwe joined Nollywood in 1998. She was introduced to the industry by a family friend, Kelvin Ugwu who is a broadcaster and actor.

At that time, she had just completed her secondary school education and was waiting for her JAMB result. Instead of just being idle, she decided to try her hands with acting and that was how her Nollywood story began.

The actress revealed that her first major audition was for the movie, Igodo where she got the role of Agu’s wife

Another movie that shot her into limelight was My Love where she featured alongside, Ramsey Nouah.

Chiege disclosed that she received the full support of her family especially her dad when she decided to venture into acting.

The actress also disclosed that her time with the Drama society of her secondary school helped her hone her acting talent. She also revealed that she has learnt quite a lot from notable movie directors whenever she’s on set.

Chiege started out by playing extra scenes before she eventually landed a major role and she has been on an upward trajectory ever since.

Movies

Chiege revealed in an interview that she usually takes her time to read the script and if she’s not satisfied with it, she will tell the producer that she won’t be able to feature in the movie.

One of her most popular movies was Oganigwe. It was Nollywood’s version of the popular Cinderella story. The movie was directed by Fred Amata. Chiege featured alongside the likes of Zack Amata, Emmanuel France, Olu Jacobs, Larry Koldsweat, Camilla Mberekpe, Amaechi Munagor, Clem Ohameze, Steph-Nora Okere and Kenneth Okonkwo.

The movies revolved around an orphan, Olanma which was played by Chiege who lived with her step mother (Camila Mberekpe).

Chiege once revealed in an interview that her most challenging movie was Under Fire where she played the role of a typical village who couldn’t speak English. The movie was directed by Tchidi Chikere.

Nollywood

Responding to rumours about sexual harassment and homosexualism in the industry, Chiege revealed that she’s yet to experience such although she heard it does exist.

Marriage

Chiege got married in 2002 to Tony Ebbe, a senior police officer in 2002.

The actress disclosed that her husband saw her on the screen, and that was how the attraction started. She revealed that he was very persistent and kept asking her out on date which she finally obliged. In the course of getting to know him more, she discovered that their parent were very good friends.

Chiege further revealed that she had to make adjustments to her acting schedule when she got married and she had to be selective with the kind of movies she featured in.

The union produced a baby girl but it only lasted 3 months.

After the crash of her marriage, Chiege realised she was pregnant. When the baby was born, she was named, Munachimsoaga.

The actress revealed that it was quite difficult taking care of the baby all by herself. Also, she has a sister that assists her in taking care of the baby anytime she’s at a movie location.

When asked in an interview the reason why her marriage didn’t last long, the actress disclosed that they were incompatible.

Chiege has since remarried and she has a son with her new husband.

NGO

The actress has an NGO which is focused on taking care of the less-privileged people in Nigeria. Chiege disclosed that her NGO was set up to help people solve their problems. The NGO also creates awareness on diseases and help people with disability. 

Awards

Chiege Alisigwe has received several awards since she began acting. Some of these include

  • Most Promising Actress in Nigeria at the City People Entertainment Awards,
  • Best Actress of the Year at the Africa Movie Academy Awards,
  • Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards and
  • Most Promising Actress in Nigeria at the Best of Nollywood Awards

Hobbies

The actress revealed in an interview that she loves listening to music and singing. She also loves to spend time with her daughter.

Additionally, Chiege was a lover of sports while growing up. According to Chiege, she was a very good athlete and she won several medals for her school including a State Championship medal. Unfortunately, she couldn’t pursue the career further when she lost contact with her coach.

Nollywood

The actress revealed in interview when asked about Nollywood that the industry had a come a long way. Although the industry is not where it ought to be, it is certainly not where it used to be.

She’s also mentioned that the industry has a great future and she can only expect it to keep growing although she believes the industry needs to step in the area of movie production.
