Tiwa Savage: Biography
Tiwa Savage was born in Ikeja, Lagos on the 5th of February 1980. Her family relocated to London when she was 11 years old. While attending high school, she was a trombone player for her school’s orchestra band. She would later move to the United States of America.

Her Music Career
When Tiwa Savage released her debut single, Kele Kele Love, the song made it all the way to the top of several Nigerian music charts and many wondered who this talented songstress was. Many didn’t know that she had been involved in the music industry for over decade before rising to fame in Nigeria.
She started out as a backup vocalist for George Michael during her teenage years. She also lent vocals to other musicians like Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Blu Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Bocelli, Ms. Dynamite, amongst others.
The songstress has also performed on stage with the likes of Sting, 50 Cent, The Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Robbie Williams and Destiny’s Child, to name a few.
Tiwa participated in the UK edition of The X Factor and advanced to the final 24 while attending the Berklee School of Music. She revealed in an interview that during her time at Berklee she was motivated by the drive and passion of the younger students.
In 2009, Sony/ATV Music Publishing signed Savage to a music deal. It was this deal that enabled her write for the likes of Babyface, Kat Deluna, Fantasia Barrino, Monica and Mýa. She co-wrote the track “Collard Greens & Cornbread” off Fantasia Barrino’s Grammy-nominated album, Back to Me. Also, she received songwriting credits for her contribution to Monica’s soul-tinged ballad, ‘Catch Me’.
Tiwa made her film debut with Joke Silva and Ireti Doyle in the stage adaptation of For Coloured Girls.
She released her debut studio album on the 3rd of July 2013. Some of the hit tracks include Kele Kele Love, Love Me (3x), Without My Heart, Ife Wa Gbona, Folarin, Olorun Mi and Eminado.
The album shot her to the limelight and she revealed it was straight from her heart and she had worked tirelessly to release it. Tiwa brought over ten years of musical experience into the album.
Tiwa also owns a record label, 323 Entertainment, which she founded with her then-manager and husband Tunji “Tee Billz” Balogun. This was prior to joining Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records in 2012. She joined Mavin when 323 Entertainment teamed up with Don Jazzy. Tiwa was one of the lead artists on Solar Plexus, which was Mavin’s record label compilation album in 2012.
As part of the celebration for Nigeria’s 52nd independence, Tiwa performed her rendition of “Arise, O Compatriots” for Ndani Sessions. In November 2012, she partnered with Waje, Praiz, Timi Dakolo and Pamela Egoh on the Ovation Red Carol Theme Song “Higher”.
In January 2014, Tiwa released “Love in Yellow”, a promotional single meant to celebrate Valentine’s Day 2014. In June 2014, she collaborated with Mi Casa, Lola Rae, Sarkodie, Diamond Platnumz, and Davido on a song for DSTV’s Africa Rising campaign, which was designed to inspire Africans to partake in community-based social investment projects. The music video for the song, released on 24 June 2014, was shot and directed by South African production house Callback Dream. Her second studio album, R.E.D, was released on 19 December 2015. It produced the singles “My Darlin'”, “African Waist” and “If I Start To Talk”. Savage sings in English and Yoruba
In June 2016, Tiwa signed a management and distribution deal with Roc Nation which she announced on her Instagram account. The deal made the singer the first Nigerian artist to be signed to the label.
Tiwa was the first African female artist to sell out Indigo at the O2 Arena in London. The concert was titled the Savage tour which was her first in the U.K. Fans enjoyed a night of Afrobeats performances from the likes of the Mavins Family, Alternate Sound group, Wstrn, Awilo Longomba and Mystro.
