Engineering is one of the courses that stimulate your mind. The beauty of engineering is its ability to empower you to make things, dismantle things and fix things.
In this post, we will be looking at one of the disciplines of Engineering Petroleum engineering.
Best University in Nigeria to Study Petroleum Engineering
It is one of the most popular engineering courses and it involves the development and exploitation of crude oil and natural gas fields as well as the technical analysis and forecasting of their future performance. Its origins lie in both mining engineering and geology.
Graduate Petroleum Engineers are dedicated to providing energy that powers our society. Also, petroleum engineers are involved in the extraction of gaseous and liquid hydrocarbon products from the earth, is concerned with drilling, producing, processing, and transporting these products and handling all the related economic and regulatory considerations.

The University of Benin is one of the top universities in the country offering Petroleum Engineering.
In 2017, UNIBEN emerged the 1st runner up at the Petrobowl Competition in 2017. It was the first African school to get to the finals of the competition. The PetroBowl competition was founded in 2002 and was created, organized, and administered by the SPE Gulf Coast Section taking place once a year during the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE). As its popularity grew, a two-stage pilot program was introduced in 2013 to transition the contest into a truly global event. This included two regional qualifiers taking place in Africa and Asia in 2014, and an expansion to six regional qualifiers in 2015. Following the successful completion of the pilot program, PetroBowl is now recognized as an SPE International global program.
The UNIBEN Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering was established in 2006 after approval by the Federal Government. The department took off with a population of 100 students in two departments; Petroleum Engineering and Gas Engineering.
The Department of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Ibadan is one of the oldest and best in the country.
It was formally established in 1972 as one of the foundation departments of the Faculty of Technology and very well equipped by the Canadian Agency for International Development (CIDA).
Located in Owerri, Imo state, the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) is another prominent university offering top quality Petroleum Engineering education. The Department of Engineering is under the School of Engineering & Engineering Technology.
- University of Lagos
UNILAG also offers Petroleum and Gas Engineering and it is one of the best universities in the country to study this course
- University of Calabar (UNICAL)
Located in Calabar, Cross River, UNICAL is one of Nigeria’s second-generation federal universities.
The University used to be a campus of the University of Nigeria until 1975. UNICAL was established by decree to fulfill this traditional mandate, its motto “Knowledge for Service”.
