Petroleum Training Institute is located in Effurun Delta state. The institute was established with the aim of training students to meet the labor force demands of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria and West Africa as a whole. General minimum entry requirements

The general minimum entry qualification required of applicants to the Petroleum Training Institute include the following:

·        Approved relevant diploma qualifications from an accredited polytechnic in order to be admitted for PTI higher national diploma.

·        PTI Diploma or National Diploma (ND) in a field relevant to the applicant’s Higher National Diploma Programme.

·        Applicants must have  an overall grade of C of Lower credit and must also have not less than one-year post qualification industrial work experience

·        Or a minimum of pass grade with at least two years post-qualification industrial work experience.

Entry qualifications

Candidates who wish to be admitted into the Institute must have chosen the Petroleum Training Institute as their first choice of Institution in the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations. Applicants are also required to then apply for the Post UTME screening on the website of the institute. The admission of eligible candidates will also be determined by an interview which is conducted by the Petroleum Training Institute.

Requirements for National Diploma Programs

Below are the requirements for the following courses:

Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology

Mechanical Engineering Technology

Petroleum & Natural Gas Processing Technology

Computer Science & Information Technology

Applicants must possess the minimum entry qualifications as seen below.

  • Applicants must have credit passes in 5 subjects at GCE O/Level, WASC or SSCE (WAEC or NECO) or their equivalent. These credit passes must be obtained at not more than two sittings. The subjects include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language and any one of the following science subjects, Biology, Electricity, and Metal Work, Geography, Agricultural Science, Technical, in addition to at least a pass in the English Language.
  • National Technical Certificate (NCE) certificate in a field relevant to the Diploma programme of the proposed course. This is in addition to credit passes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language and any other relevant subject
  • Credit passes in four subjects at the National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB). Subjects should include: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, Mechanical Engineering Practice or metalwork in addition to any other science or social science subject and at least a pass in the English Language. (for ND-Mechanical Engineering Programme only)
  • Credit passes in five subjects at National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) to include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language and two other Electrical subjects

Petroleum and Natural Gas Processing Engineering Technology/ Science Laboratory Technology

Applicants to either of the departments above must have any of the following qualifications:

  • Candidates must have five credit passes at GCE O/Level, WASC, SSCE or its equivalent, obtained at not more than two sittings. The subjects must include Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry and two other subjects from the following: Physics, Biology/Agricultural Science, Economics, Geography, Technical Drawing, Wood Work and Metal Work. This is in addition to at least pass grades in Physics, Biology and English Language
  • A National Technical Certificate in Chemistry Laboratory Technology/Industrial Safety
  • Candidates must have successfully completed the one academic year relevant PTI Pre-Diploma programme.

Petroleum Marketing Technology/ Petroleum Marketing And Business Studies Technology (ND)

  • Candidates must have five credit passes at GCE O/Level, WASC, SSCE or it’s equivalent which must include English Language, Mathematics and any two of the following subjects: Economics, History, Religious Knowledge, Business Methods, Commerce, Government, Accounting, Geography, and Statistics. Candidate must also have at least a pass in Chemistry
  • Credit passes in relevant subjects at the National Business Certificate of NABTEB. A credit pass in Chemistry is compulsory
  • Candidates must have successfully completed the one academic year relevant PTI Pre-Diploma programme.

Welding and Fabrication Engineering Technology

  • Candidates must have five credit passes at pwht, GCE O/Level, WASC, SSCE or their equivalents, obtained at not more than two sittings which must include Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Physics and any of the following subjects: Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, Statistics, Biology or Agricultural Science, Basic Electronics, Metal Work Wood Work, Geography, Economics, in addition to at least a pass in English Language
  • Credit passes in the following subjects: Mathematics, Used miller XMT 350 CC CV welder Technology, Welding and Fabrication Practices, Technical Drawing or Integrated Science with at least a pass in the English language. This is in addition to a National Technical Certificate (NTC) Examination in Welding and Fabrication Craft Practice
  • Five credit passes in National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) to include Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry and Physics, Welding Practice, and any other Science or Social Science subject
  • Candidates must have successfully completed the one academic year relevant PTI Pre-Diploma programme.

Certificate Programs

The Certificate programs offered at PTI include:

General welding

Applicants must have either of these qualifications:

  1. Candidates must have a minimum of passes in four subjects at GCE O/Level, WASC or SSCE or its equivalent, obtained at not more than two sittings. These subjects should include Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and one of the following subjects: Further Mathematics, Statistics, Basic Electronics, Metal Work; Wood Work, Geography, Economics, plus at least a pass in the English Language
  2. City and Guilds Intermediate Certificate in Welding.

Commercial Diving Class I

The duration of the commercial diving class is 18 Weeks (Admissions are done twice yearly)

  1. Candidates must have three credits at SSCE, NECO and GCE O’ level or its equivalent to include Mathematics, Physics and a pass in English Language. This is in addition to a Government Trade Testing Certificate in welding or Mechanical Engineering.
  2. HSE part IV and III Certificate in SCUBA diving.
  3. Three credits at National Technical Certificate (NATEC) to include Mathematics, Physics and a pass in the English language.
  4. Mahindra 1526 Oil Filter Certificate.
  5. Intermediate C and G in Welding or Mechanical Engineering.
  6. Any other equivalent recognized Certificate.

Candidates applying for the commercial diving class must undergo a comprehensive medical examination and a swimming test/interview.

Commercial diving class II

Class II lasts for 6 weeks and surface supplied diving certificate is awarded. Below are the qualifications for class II

  1. PTI class I dividing the certificate.
  2. HSE part IV and III certificate in SCUBA diving.
  3. Candidates with relevant offshore commercial diving experience and who must have attained 50 meters depth.
  4. Any other equivalent recognized international certificate.

Candidates must present their diving logbooks

Qualification for Higher National Diploma into the following programs:

Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology

  • National Diploma (ND) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology
  • ND in Electrical Technicians Power, instrumentation and control.
  • National Diploma (ND) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.

Environmental Technology

Applicants must possess the following qualifications

  • National Diploma (ND) in Industrial Safety
  • National Diploma (ND)  in Industrial Safety and Environmental Technology.
  • National Diploma (ND)  in Environmental Science (not Environmental Design or Regional Planning Studies.)
  • National Diploma (ND)  in Chemical Laboratory Technology or Science Laboratory Technology.

Industrial Safety Technology

  • National Diploma (ND) in Industrial Safety.
  • ND Safety and Environmental Technology.
  • National Diploma (ND) obtained from Petroleum Training Institute in any of the following subjects:
  1. Petroleum Engineering
  2. Petroleum and Gas Processing
  3. Mechanical Engineering
  4. Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology.

Mechanical Engineering Technology

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Technicians.
  • National Diploma (ND) in Mechanical Engineering.
  • National Diploma (ND) in Related Mechanical Engineering option.

Petroleum Marketing Technology/Petroleum Marketing And Business Studies Technology (ND)

  • ND in Petroleum Marketing and Business Studies.
  • National Diploma (ND) in Petroleum Products Marketing.
  • National Diploma (ND)  in Business Studies and related subjects such as:
  • Business Administration.
  • Management Science.
  • Marketing.
  • Accounting.
  • Financial Studies

In addition to at least a pass in Chemistry in WASC/SSCE, GCE (WAEC/NECO)
