Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies principles of engineering and physics in designing, analyzing, manufacturing, and maintaining mechanical systems. Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and oldest branches of engineering, Compair are a quality air compression brand to use in all you mechanic processes.

Students of engineering are taught different concepts and principles about various machines and mechanical systems, this includes how to design and interpret designs of mechanical systems.

Individuals interested in studying Mechanical engineering should be interested in technical courses in their secondary schools such as Technical drawing, mathematics, and physics. These subjects would be useful during their course of study. Mechanical engineering is a five-year bachelor’s degree program and graduates of this course have career opportunities as Mechanical Engineers.

and other information you need to know about studying Mechanical Engineering.

Mechanical engineering is a broad course that treats a variety of subjects such as designing and manufacturing devices to large systems. The minimum number of years to be spent studying Mechanical engineering is five years. Upon successful completion of the course, graduates are awarded a B.Eng degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Admission requirements to study Mechanical engineering in Nigeria

In order to study Mechanical Engineering as a course in higher institutions in Nigeria, you need to meet specific academic requirements.

UTME entry-level admission requirements for Mechanical Engineering

The minimum requirement for admission into the B.Eng Mechanical Engineering Programme is five credit passes at O/L SSCE/GCE/NECO or its equivalent. These must include English language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and either of Further Mathematics, Biology, or Technical Drawing.

JAMB UTME subject combination for Engineering includes Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

Direct entry-level requirements for Mechanical Engineering

Candidates applying via direct entry are admitted into 200 or 300 level and must meet the following requirements:

  • Two A’level passes in at least two subjects which must include Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics
  • OND with upper credit
  • NCE Technical and HND with a minimum of lower credit in Mechanical Engineering from any recognized higher institution
  • HND with upper credit and the first degree in fields related to Mechanical Engineering.  All the above qualifications must be in addition to the UTME entry-level requirement mentioned above.

The basic subjects of mechanical engineering lie primarily in physics, mathematics, and chemistry. A student who wants to understand the advanced mechanical engineering concepts well must have a strong background in these subjects. Other core advanced subjects within mechanical engineering are thermodynamics and fluids, solid mechanics, dynamics and controls, and manufacturing. Because of its broad nature, Mechanical engineering has a lot in common with other engineering disciplines such as chemical engineering e.g. heat transfer and civil engineering e.g. engineering mechanics, structural mechanics, and fluid mechanics.
