This is because students of the course are needed in various areas involving businesses and firms. For example, it is important for companies to measure their performance and know how they are doing compared to their competitors. Business Administration teaches students how to do just that. ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

Business Administration exists to give students a broad educational foundation for management roles and functions. The course also trains students in functional areas of business and how to apply knowledge to the problems that arise in businesses and organizations.

Usually, the first three years of the course focuses on general concepts of management then as the course proceeds, the student of Business Administration has an opportunity to major in a particular aspect of business activity he or she is interested in. Such could include:

  • Production
  • Marketing
  • Personnel management
  • General management.

After the third year, students get to choose their particular area of interest. The general concepts of management taught in the first year are then tested by the use of case studies and experiences peculiar to Nigeria.

Admission requirements for Business Administration

Business Administration is a four-year degree programme. In order to be admitted into Business Administration, applicants are expected to have taken English Language, Economics and two other social science subjects in the annual UTME examination.

The JAMB subject combination for Business Administration is:

English language

Economics

Two other social science subjects

O’ level requirements

Candidates applying to the Department of Business Administration in any Nigerian university are expected to have obtained five credit passes in WAEC/NECO/GCE and its equivalents in the following subjects:

  • Mathematics
  • English Language
  • Economics
  • Two from Accounting, Commerce, Geography

Although admission requirements vary in different Universities, these are generally the acceptable requirements for Business Administration in Nigeria.

Direct Entry requirements

Applicants seeking admission via direct entry are required to have A level passes in subjects chosen from the following:

  • Economics
  • Accounts
  • Business Management
  • Government
  • Geography
  • Statistics

This is in addition to the required WAEC subjects’ combination for Business Administration.

  • Diploma level, Ordinary National Diploma (ND)/ Higher National Diploma (HND)

Candidates applying via either of the options above must have obtained a minimum of lower credit from a recognized institution in any of the following fields:

Accounting

Accounting/Auditing

Banking

Finance

Marketing

Purchasing and Supply

Actuarial science/Insurance

Psychology

Business studies

Public Administration

Statistics

Financial studies

Candidates must have gotten this from a recognized institution with a minimum of lower credit in any of the following fields of studies above.

In addition to the National Diploma or Higher National Diploma, Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) credits in O’L subjects as stated in the O’ level requirements above.

  • National Certificate in Education (NCE) requirement:

Candidates applying via NCE must in addition to O’L requirements have at least a merit pass in any of the following subjects:

Business Education

Mathematics/Economics

Geography/Economics

Secretarial Studies

Financial studies

  • Professional certificate requirements

Candidates applying with a professional certificate are eligible for admission if they have passed any of the following professional courses: ICAN, CIB, ACIS, CIS, ACCA, NIM, and CMA or ICPA. This is in addition to the O’L entry requirement stated earlier.

While some have it under the Faculty of Administration, some have it under the Faculty of Management Science. Business Administration is also known as Business Management in some other universities.
