Firstly, you will need to register for the IELTS test in Nigeria

Step one – Find the nearest IELTS test location

The British Council in Nigeria is the primary designated centre for the IELTS test in Nigeria. The British centers can be found in 11 states in Nigeria, these are: Lagos, Ilorin, Akure, Abeokuta, Enugu, Kano, Abuja, Benin City, Calabar, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan. The centre runs up to 5 test dates per month.

Step 2: Choose the type of your IELTS exam. There are two types of IELTS examinations, which is: General Training or Academic

Step 3: You can register online and pay online or download the application form to print, complete, and submit to your local test centre.

Each candidate who wants to register for the IELTS examination will have to read on guidelines and instructions such as the type of the test questions you will meet, and other details about getting results on the British Council site.

You will be asked to provide a copy of your valid identity document.  These documents will also be required on the day of the test. Such documents include:

A current international passport

A valid contact address

Step 4: Select the date and location of the IELTS examination which suits you the best. Ensure you double-check with the British council website to make sure the date is available.

Step 5: Once you have submitted the required documents, upload your scanned international passport. Your passport should include the following information: your ID, birth date, image, expiration date, and signature

Step 6: Complete the payment process online with your master card or credit/debit card. You also have offline options such as online bank transfers or pay directly through bank deposits. If you choose the offline payment method you have to print your registration application along with your bank draft and passport within 5 business days.

After your application has been processed, your preferred centre will send you a written confirmation of the date and time of your test. The speaking and writing tests normally take place on the same day. If this does not happen, then the two tests will take place within seven days of each other.

There are two IELTS tests available, which are:

IELTS Academic

IELTS General Training

The test you choose should be based on the purpose for which you are taking the test. IELTS Academic test

The IELTS academic test is meant for people applying for higher education in an English speaking environment. The academic test reflects some of the aspects of academic language and also helps to evaluate whether you are ready to begin studying or training. The IELTS academic test measures whether you are well proficient in the use of English language and if your level of proficiency is suitable for an academic environment. The IELTS academic test is widely supported by the institutions that recognize IELTS.

You should take the IELTS Academic test if you want to: 

  • study at an undergraduate level or postgraduate level anywhere in the world
  • apply for Tier 4 Student Visa at a university in the United Kingdom
  • work in a professional organization located in an English-speaking country

IELTS General Training

The IELTS general training test is meant for those who are going to English speaking countries for secondary school education, work experience or training programs.

Note: This examination is also a requirement for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test measures language proficiency in a practical context. It also focuses on basic survival skills in every day, social and workplace contexts.

You should take the IELTS general test if you want to:

  • study or train below degree level
  • work in an English-speaking country
  • emigrate to an English-speaking country
  • get another job in your own country.

How IELTS is scored

IELTS tests are scored on a 9-band scale. The results are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest).

How to get your IELTS result

If you have any questions about your IELTS result or want to preview your results online, contact your IELTS test centre.

Paper-based test: If you’ve taken a paper-based test, your test result will be available 13 days after completing the test.

Computer-delivered IELTS: If you have taken a computer-delivered test , your test results will be ready between 5 and 7 days after your test.

IELTS for UKVI: This is an IELTS test to obtain a UK visa or for immigration. You can view your test results 13 days after you have taken your test.

IELTS for Life Skills: If you have taken IELTS for Life Skills, your test results will be available within 7 days after the test.

Viewing your results online

If you want to view your results online, your results will also be available to view online for 28 days. Your IELTS test centre will provide you with a link to your results. You can also view your result on the British Council website. When you log in to check your result, you will see a table with an explanation of your scores. You will need your passport or ID number which you used when registering for the test and your candidate number when you want to check your IELTS results online,
