Admission requirements to study Engineering in Nigerian Universities

In most Nigerian universities, the Faculty of Engineering runs for a period of four to five years depending on the mode of entry. Graduates are afterwards awarded a Bachelor of Engineering degree.

UTME mode of entry

The five-year programme is designed for candidates who gain admission into the University with the O’ level examinations, which are the Senior School Certificate (SSC) or WASCE or NECO or General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary level or their equivalents. Candidates must have five credits, which must include the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and English Language. Results must be obtained in not more than two sittings

Direct entry mode

Candidates applying via direct entry must have the following:

  • Passes at HSC or GCE A’ level in at least two of the following subjects: Pure Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. This is in addition to obtaining five credit passes in O level examinations in the following: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry English Languages and any other science subject
  •  Pass at upper credit HND examination in an Engineering course from any recognized Polytechnic
  • First degree holders in relevant Engineering disciplines such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science
  • Candidates with passes in Physics and Mathematics in (HSC) Higher School Certificate and who also have a credit in Chemistry at O’ level examinations may be admitted into the four-year programme.

Admission into the Faculty of Engineering is highly competitive. Therefore, candidates are to ensure they have very high grades both at O’ level or A level examinations and also in JAMB score.

JAMB UTME score of at least 180 in most federal universities and 150 in most private and state universities.
