University of Ilorin Postgraduate Requirements

Currently, UNILORIN is one of the most sought after schools in the country and in this post; we’ll take a look at the PG courses and their requirements.

The University of Ilorin Postgraduate Courses are grouped as follows:

Diploma Programmes

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Education, PGDE
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science, PGDCS
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics, PDS
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Management, PGDEM
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Management, PGDSM
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Conflict and Peace studies PGD

Masters Degree

  • Master in International Studies, MIS
  • Master in Geographic and Information Studies, MGIS
  • Master of Business Administration, MBA
  • Master of Public Administration, MPA
  • Master of Industrial and Labour Relations, MILR
  • Master of Education, M.Ed.
  • Master of Arts, M.A.
  • Master of Science, M.Sc.(in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Plant Biology, Microbiology, Industrial Chemistry, Computer Science and Geology)
  • Master of Engineering, (in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Agric. Engineering)

Doctor of Philosophy Research Programme which leads to the award of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in various disciplines.

Here are the admission requirements to these course options:

Postgraduate Diploma in Education, PGDE

The Diploma applies to graduates without teaching qualifications from recognized university or person with qualification adjudged to be equivalent to a first degree.

Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science, PGDCS

  • A graduate with a minimum of Second Class (lower) degree from a recognized University preferably in any Science, Engineering, Social Sciences discipline and Humanities;
  • HND in Computer Science or Engineering from a recognized Polytechnic with minimum of Lower Credit; HND in any other discipline different from those above but preferably from Science or Social Sciences with a minimum of Lower Credit from a recognized Polytechnic or Institution with a least one year cognate experience;
  • At least 5 O/L Credits including English and Mathematics are compulsory for all candidates.

Postgraduate Diploma in Geographic Information System, PGDGIS

  • Graduates of the University of Ilorin or other approved Universities and institutions with a B.Sc. Hons. degree, HND, or its equivalent in Geography, Environmental Science, Sciences, other Social Sciences, forestry, Engineering, Architecture, Town Planning, etc.
  • Also, candidates with substantial working experience who have attained managerial position in public and private organization may still be considered on individual merit.

Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics, PDS

  • Graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in science and relevant allied basic or social science disciplines from a recognized university
  • HND in statistics with 5 credit passes at GCE 0/Level including English Language and Mathematics.

Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Management, PGDEM

  • Graduates of the University of Ilorin and those of any other approved universities
  • Higher National Diploma, HND, holders with upper credits

Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Management, PGDSM

  • Graduates with a Bachelor’s degree from any recognised university
  • Candidates with professional qualification such as ICAN or Higher National Diploma (with at least lower credit) may be considered.

 

Postgraduate Diploma in Conflict and Peace Studies, PGDCPS

  • Graduates of the University of Ilorin or any other approved university with appropriate Bachelor’ degree in any discipline.
  • Candidates holding the Higher National Diploma in Law, Public Administration, Journalism, etc. with upper credit are also eligible for admission.
  • Candidates with similar qualification but with a lower credit shall also be eligible for admission provided they satisfy the Board of Postgraduate School by scoring a minimum of 50% in a qualifying examination administered by the University, and may still be considered on individual merit.

Masters Degree Programmes

Admission Requirements:

  • Graduates of UNILORIN with a minimum of Second Class Honour Degree (Upper Division) and must be applying for programmes in which they have their first degrees.
  • Graduates from other Universities with first Class are also eligible.
  • Graduates from other universities seeking admission into programmes outside their own field irrespective of the class of degree may be admitted provided they satisfy Senate in a qualifying examination to be conducted.

MBA/MPA programmes

  • Graduate of the University of Ilorin or any other approved university of any field who satisfies the Board of Postgraduate School by scoring a minimum of 60% in a qualifying examination administered by the University are eligible.
  • Also, MPA programme candidates with professional qualifications such as HND (upper credit) with a minimum of 5 years post qualification experience are admissible provided they score a minimum of 60% in qualifying examination administered by the University.
  • Candidates for the MBA (Executive) programme are required to possess a degree from a recognized University or hold professional qualifications approved by Senate, e.g HND (upper credit), ICAN, ACCA, ACMA, AIB, ACIS, etc. and have at least 5 years post qualification experience in the case of degree holders, and at least 8 years for HND and other approved professional qualifications.
  • All candidates for this programme (MBA Executive) must be in full time employment in relatively senior management position.

The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D

Admission requirements:

  • Candidates with Masters Degree from University of Ilorin and other recognized University must have scored at least 60% or its equivalent in their final Masters Degree examination to qualify for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy programmes.
  • Also, all candidates are to appear for an interview to be conducted by the relevant department. The outcome of the interview determines selection.
