The University of Ibadan Part time Programme is available at the Distance Learning Centre (DLC) of the University.
The origin of the programme can be traced to 1972 when the Department of Adult Education proposed the programme to the University. This proposal was eventually presented to the Senate of the University in 1976.
Subsequently, the programme was approved by the University alongside the National Universities Commission (NUC). The approval came with a clause that it would be a self-financing programme.
The Distance Learning or Part time programme was initially named the External Degrees programme before being rechristened the External Studies programme in 1988. The courses offered were from the Department of Adult Education, the Department of Guidance and Counseling and the Department Teacher Education.
In 1993, four departments were added – Special Education, Library Science, Educational Management and Physical and Health Education and by this time the degree being awarded had been upgraded to the Bachelor of Education (B. Ed).
In 1998, the Faculty of Agriculture began participating in the distance education and by 2002; the University had changed the name of the centre from the Centre for External Studies to Distance Learning Centre (DLC).
Over the last 40 years, the DLC has produced over 4000 graduates from various departments.
The curriculum of the DLC is no different from what is taught in the full time programme. But, the DLC is tailored to meet the needs of working class individuals and people whose schedules, distance or financial condition may not permit them to enrol in the full-time course.
The DLC employs technology as a means of interaction with students which means that students require very minimal physical interaction with their facilitators. This enables the DLC to have students in different locations within and outside the country.
Students can read the study pack of their respective courses at their convenience but they’re usually expected on campus for a period of 6 weeks for revision and examination.
Currently, the head office of the DLC is located at Moroundiya Site, Idi-Ose, Along Moniya Road, on the New Ibadan – Ilorin Expressway, Ibadan. There’s also an office at 20 Awolowo Avenue, Old Bodija, Ibadan. Other offices exist in Lagos and Abeokuta.
The DLC has 6 academic programmes which have been fully accredited by the NUC. These include courses from the Faculty of Education, Social Science, Science etc.
There are 4 other programmes that will be added soon and they include:
- Nursing
- Computer Science
- Sociology
- History and
