Social sciences courses are those that deal with human beings, societies; the relationships that exist among people and how society functions as a whole. Social sciences exist in different fields which are listed below:
- Economics- Economics deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.
- Geography: This deals with the analysis of population, the land, the relationship between the two and often linking to the earth sciences.
- Philosophy: This is the study of general and fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.
- Public Administration: This deals with the implementation of government policies and its effects on the people
- Psychology- Psychology makes use of studying both social behaviour and neurobiological processes.
- Sociology & Anthropology- Sociology is the study of society, both on the individual and structural level.
- Social work: This is a profession that has to do with individuals, families, groups and communities so as to enhance social functioning and overall well-being.
Social Science Courses in Nigeria & Requirements
The courses mentioned above are the list of social science courses you can find in most Nigerian schools; although different schools can include various other courses in their faculty of social sciences. In other words, courses you may find under social sciences in one school may differ from that found in another school (eg. Faculty of management sciences)
This article covers the different social science courses found in Nigerian universities and the admission requirements for these courses.
General Admission Requirements
Candidates for admission into any of the four-year degree programme or courses in the Faculty of Social Sciences should possess a Senior Secondary School Certificate or General Certificate of Education or any other equivalent examination with at least five credit passes of which one shall be in English Language, and at least a credit pass in Mathematics.
In addition, candidates must have acceptable passes in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) requirements:
Admission requirements for courses under the Faculty of Social Science
Geography
Admission requirements for UTME candidates
Candidates via UTME must have five O’ level passes in English language, Mathematics, Economics and any other relevant subject at SSCE/NECO/NABTEB or its equivalent
Admission requirements for direct entry candidates
Candidates applying via direct entry to Geography must have two A’ level passes in Geography and any of the following subjects: Economics, History, Agric science, Geology, Literature in English, Biology, Chemistry or Physics
Candidates who have an NCE or OND with merit or at least a lower credit level in any of the following subjects: Town planning, Surveying, Environmental Management or Tropical Science are also eligible for admission into 200 level

Political Science
Admission requirements for UME candidates
Candidates applying for Political Science via UTME must have five credit passes in English and other social science subjects
Admission requirements for direct entry candidates
Candidates applying via direct entry must have two A’ level passes to include Government or History
UME subject combination is History/Government, English and two other art subjects
Social Work
Admission requirements for UME candidates
Candidates via UTME must have five credit passes to include English language, Government and three other art or social science subjects
Candidates applying via direct entry are required to have any of the following qualifications:
Two A’ level passes in addition to O’ level requirements
Diploma in Social work with a minimum of merit pass
Public Administration and Local government
Admission requirement via UME
Candidates applying via UTME are required to have five credit passes in O level examinations (SSCE/NECO/NABTEB) or its equivalent to include the following subjects: Mathematics, English language, Government or History
Admission requirements via direct entry
Direct entry candidates are required to have any of the following qualifications:
Two GCE A’ level passes or its equivalent in any of the following subjects: Government, History, Economics, Business Management, Accounting and Geography.
Diploma or Higher National diploma in public Administration and social work with a minimum of a lower credit level pass or a merit from any recognized institution
OND from any recognized institutions in law, secretarial studies or its equivalent at merit level.
All these in addition to UME requirement
Psychology
Admission requirements via UTME
Candidates applying via UTME must have the five credit passes to include Mathematics, English language, Government/History
Philosophy
Admission requirements via direct entry
Direct entry candidates must have the following qualifications:
Two A’ level passes
Diploma in any related course
Candidates who have a nurse certificate and credit in Biology health science and at least a pass in Mathematics or Statistics
All the above must be in addition to O’ level requirements
UME subject combination is English language, Biology and two other art or social science subject
Economics
Candidates who wish to study Economics must have obtained credit pass in Mathematics, English Language and Economics in addition to other social science subjects
Admission requirement for direct entry candidates
Candidates who are seeking admission via direct entry admission must have five credit passes in the General Certificate of Education or its equivalent examination of which at least two shall be at the advanced level, preferably IJMB.
Candidates with a diploma in Economics from a university recognized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) are also eligible for admission into 200 level.
