The University of Lagos as established by the federal government of Nigerian in order to meet the educational need of Nigerians, especially after independence.  The school was established in 1962.  Lagos was still the Federal Capital when Unilag was established. The Purpose of establishing the school was to give Nigerian students good training in various aspects of needs in Nigeria. The school provides training in Higher Management Studies, Business administration, Commerce, Economics and so on.

The initial intention was to make Unilag a non-residential university, but there was a change of plan and it was turned into a traditional university. The school was established on the authority of the University of Lagos Act of 1962 and it started operation on the 22nd of October, 1962.

The activities of the school are run by a provisional council and the Senate of the institution presides over academic affairs.  The College of Medicine is however controlled by a separate council.  The school therefore, consists of two separate institutions, which are the main university and the medical school, which is autonomous.

The Chancellor is like the ceremonial head of the school and he is responsible for conferring all degrees.  The vice-chancellor, on the other hand, is responsible for directing the day-to-day activities of the university. The vice-chancellor is, however, accountable to the School Council.

The same council is responsible for selecting who the next vice-chancellor would be. They are also responsible for selecting the deputy vice-chancellors and the deans of all the faculties.  The senate of the university is responsible for regulating all academic, research and teaching functions of the university.

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) represents the interest of the students. The SRC is also allowed to send a representative to the council and senate meetings and the representative must be ratified by the Dean of Student Affairs.

Since inception till date, Unilag has remained one of the most competitive tertiary institutions in Nigeria.  The school also has one of the highest numbers of admitted students each year in Nigeria. At present, the total number of students on admission is 57,183. These students are both Nigerians and foreigners.  The nNumber of undergraduates among these students is 44,602 and number of postgraduate students are 12,581.

Being among the first generation universities in Nigeria, the institution has built huge reputation, both in Nigeria and aboard. There are 25 federal universities approved by the National Universities Commission and Unilag occupies a leading position among these universities.  The school is referred to as “the University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride.”  The University of Lagos has won the award for Best University in Nigeria on many occasions.

The main campus is located at Akoka, Yaba.  The Medical Campus, on the other hand, is located some kilometers away from the main campus, that is, at Idi-Araba, Surulere, Lagos Mainland. The institution has many residential facilities and services both for students and staff members.

There are 14 academic units in total in the institution.  Most of the faculties are situated on the main campus, except for faculties like Dental Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, and Pharmacy, all of which are located within the College of Medicine in Idi-Araba.
