PhD Scholarship in Canada: How to Register Easily

Canada is one of the most popular destinations of Nigerians seeking for places to study one international course or the other.  You can study at any level of education in Canada, be it the undergraduate or postgraduate level.


There are many PhD students also studying in Canada in their various universities. Many of them are from other countries and Nigerians form a bulk of these international students studying PhD in Canada.

Funding is a very important aspect of PhD studies. In Canadian universities, their PhD students are given the required funding for the first 4 years of their study. The student will have to fund his/her own studies and researches during the rest of the time.

While a Canadian citizen may pay $2,836, an international student on the other hand may be made to pay $5,807.  The cost is borne by the Canadian government until the four years are expended by the student.

If you have not completed your PhD program after four years, you may get deported if you cannot show immigration that you have what it takes to further your studies. Consequently, you may have to leave Canada without completing your course and the four years you spent earlier would become total waste.

The chance of completing the course in another Canadian institution is very slim.

Make all possible effort also to complete your studies within four years if you are not sure of any extra source of financing after four years have expired or seek for scholarship.

Each school has specific scholarship programs for their students and international students can benefit from the scholarship program too without any problem. You may have to inquire from the particular school regarding their scholarship programs for international students.

Some documents are required before you can get scholarship in Canada for your PhD program. Some of the documents are:

  • Your transcript from the institution where you obtained your Master’s degree
  • You are required to have specific grade and this depends on the school where you studied.
  • You are to provide two recommendations from your teacher or professor
  • You are to provide personal statement, stating why you think you should be considered for the scholarship.

Not all scholarship programs for PhD programs require all the documents mentioned above; there are some other programs that do not require more than your transcript.

The scholarships have deadlines, just like any other scholarship. You need to find out about the date and register before the deadline. Some scholarships cover all areas of study, but there are specific scholarship programs for PhD students that only cover certain areas.

Make sure you also find out about this before you apply of the scholarship. Amount provided by one scholarship may differ from what others provide. There are government scholarships and there are scholarships offered by private bodies.

Visit the home page of the school to find out about the scholarship the school offer. Afterwards, register for the said scholarship if you qualify, by submitting all required documents. Such documents should be stated clearly on the webpage for the said scholarship.

If the scholarship is not among those offered by your university of your choice, just visit the home page and also register accordingly. Registration procedures are always provided on the scholarship homepages.
