Online University in Nigeria: How to Enroll

Online University in Nigeria: How to Enroll

Gone are the days when you have to attend a brick and mortal university in order to become a degree holder in any of the fields of human endeavour, believe or not, you can even enroll in an online university for military now a days. You can stay right in your home and enroll into an online program in Nigeria and graduate like any other person, who had gone to the brick and mortal university.

university

There is also no form of discrimination between the certificate you are offered and the ones that those who attended the brick and mortal universities are offered; this is because the school authority will never indicate that yours is an online degree.

If you are the very busy type and do not have time to register into a brick and mortal university for full time or part-time course of study, you can always opt for an online degree and you will have the same opportunity made available to those who attend brick and mortal universities; no difference at all.

You must however be warned that not all courses can be taken via an online university. There are some courses that require registration with a brick and mortal university, especially the science related course that require practical.

The beauty of it is that you can register for both local and international universities online. This means you can get a bachelors degree in your chosen course of study online from the University of Cambridge or University of Phoenix, depending on the school you prefer.

How does it work?

There is no more flexible way to learn than via online degree. It gives you as a student the opportunity to learn based on your own terms.  You will be able to study at your own pace and this makes it easy to manage your life and business conveniently even while studying.

Number of years varies, depending on the particular course of study. Some courses of study do not take more than 2 years, but there are others that take up to 4 years.

There are some courses that may combine both online and on-campus activities and this type is called the hybrid learning program. If you are registering for an engineering course for example, you will require hands-on training, which will require that you attend brick and mortar classroom.

You will not have to attend the physical classroom, but you are required to register your online participation by posting on class discussion board a given number of times. You can also register your participation by completing and submitting assignments online.

As an online degree student, you should be able to study on your own.  You should be able to complete your reading and given projects without any assistance from tutors.  You are expected to have good knowledge of the computer and the internet. Your reading and writing skills too are expected to be top notch.

The school may have particular requirements on the type and specification of the computer you can use to access your course materials. They may also have certain specifications on the type of internet connection that will work perfectly for your online program. Make sure you obtain the information and get prepared ahead of time.

What you must know

There is no university in Nigeria that can be referred to specifically as online university. The closest to what online universities offer is what the National Open University (NOUN) provides. Aside NOUN, some other universities offer distance learning programs that award bachelor’s degrees.

However, not all of them are accredited.  In both instances, you will not have to visit the main campus of the institution for lectures or even examination; you will have to write the examination at the particular campus in your locality. This is the hybrid form of online degree.

The only sure means of obtaining online degree for Nigerians is via foreign universities. These foreign universities do not discriminate between your certificate and that of someone who attend their brick ad mortal classes.

Questions you must ask

Accreditation

Find out if the particular online university and the online degree are accredited before you ever apply to them. Register only with reputable online universities in your best interest.

Qualification

You must first consider the entry requirements of the various courses before you register. Find out if you have the minimum entry requirement for that course.

You may never be given admission for the course if you fall short of the required qualification. If a particular online university indicates that you are qualified for your course of choice, find out if the institution and the program is accredited before you register with them.

Language understanding

Depending on the language medium via which the course is offered, you need to understand the particular language.

Find out about the language medium first and only apply for a course offered in the language you understand, except you are ready to learn the new language. If the course is offered in English language medium, the school may insist that you sit for TOEFL before you are ever offered admission.

Time availability

Despite the flexibility and freedom offered by online degrees, you need to be ready to spare time to attend lectures online and also get assignments done.

Financial concerns

Online programs will require financial commitments. You need money for the right computer, internet connection, payment of fees and several other things. You need to first consider if you can afford these things or not before you register for the online course.

Are they sportive?

Find out if the school is supportive before you register for their course too. Do they offer very good student online support? Research about this before you pitch your tent with them.

How to apply

  • The first thing to do is to decide on the particular course of study you are interested in.

  1. Good day moderator. Please, I will like to know if online MSc from accredited foreign on-campus university is acceptable by employers and for a PhD program in Nigerian universities?
