In the mid 70’s, the Federal Government of Nigeria gave a directive that all state governments in the country to establish at least one school of Health technology in their respective slates.
This led to the proliferation of schools of health technology across the nation.

Kwara State School of Health Technology
The Kwara State Government was one of the states that responded swiftly to the Federal Government’s directive by establishing the Kwara State school of Health technology, Offa in 1976.
The school was set up to train students of different cadres in the health profession; retrain and re-orient the existing health personnel and carry out research in different fields of health care;
As of 2004, the Kwara State School of Health Technology has graduated over 6,000 students in various fields of health care.
College of Health Technology, Calabar
The origin of the College of Health Technology, Calabar can be traced to the Institute of Public Health which was established towards the latter part of 1970. The institute used the Diamond Health Centre, Diamond Hill, Calabar as its temporary site and during this period, 21 School Health Attendants and 5 Community Nursing Students were admitted for training.
In 1971, the Institute moved to No. 2 Hawkins Road, Calabar and began training Rural Health Assistants and Leprosy Attendants. In 1975, the College moved to its permanent site at Mary Slessor Avenue, Calabar. A year later, the name of the Institution was changed to the School of Health Technology following its approval by the Federal Ministry of Health.
Subsequently, the first batch of Public Health Nurses, direct intake of Community Midwives, Rural Health Superintendents, Public Health Superintendents (now Junior Community Health Extension Workers (JCHEWs)), Medical Records Assistants and Assistant Medical Records Officers were trained.
Lagos State College of Health Technology
Lagos State College of Health Technology, fondly called LASCOHET, is one of the oldest colleges of health technology in Nigeria.
The college was established in 1920. It was initially known as the School of Hygiene. At that time, the School of hygiene offered six major health courses before incorporating the training of community midwives and nurses into its program between 1957 and 1966. In 1977, following the Federal Government’s directive, the school transformed from a School of hygiene to a School of Health Technology.
Anambra State College of Health Technology
The College was established in 1992 after the creation of Anambra State a year earlier. Currently, the college has 7 departments: Community Health, Environmental Health, Medical Imaging Technology, Health Information Management, Pharmacy Technician and Public Health Nursing.
