Virtually all governors in Nigeria live opulence lifestyle and this is telling on the economy of their states. You may be surprised that Nigerian governors only receive about N1 million as salary on monthly basis. But the truth remains that the lifestyle they live is far above their earning.
The approved Remuneration Package for Political, for Political, Public, and Judicial Office Holders determines how much governors of the states receive as annual pay. The remuneration package was prepared y the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). This remuneration became effective since 1st of July, 2009.
Putting the remuneration stated above into consideration, a state governor in Nigeria is billed to earn a total of N11,540,896 per annum.
The annual basic salary out of this amount is just N2,223,705. The annual leave allowance is N222,370.50. The governor has a entitlement to 400% of his annual salary as a loan for vehicles and maintenance. This will amount to N8,894,820.00. This is part of the contents of the 2008 remuneration package.
However, it had been noticed in Nigeria that the governors go about the place with long convoys, sometimes more than four vehicles. These cars include SUVs and a host of other luxury cars. It is therefore very clear that the governors are actually spending more than the approved N8.9 million on vehicles since costing those cars they drive around will give an amount far higher than the approved amount. In fact, the N8.9 million may not be able to buy some of the cars in their convoys.

The state government in each state is responsible for providing accommodation for each of the governors in these states. The state government also provides furniture for these houses.
Aside from the amounts outlined above as contained in the RMAFC package, the package does not set any kind of limit to the amount of estacode these governors can receive. Estacode talk about allowances given to the governors in foreign currencies when they go on foreign trips. The governor
he governor is ,therefore, free to take any amount from the state coffer as remuneration for estacodes when on these foreign trips. The amount the governor can collect as Duty Tour allowance for any of his local tours is also not stated in the RMAFC package.
The only information contained in the RMAFC in this regard said that the estacode and Duty Tour Allowance would be made available to the governor each time he requests for it.
Each of the 36 states also bears the medical expenses of the governor. If a governor completes his tenure successfully, he will be given N6,671,115 as his severance gratuity.
A deputy governor, on the other hand, is given total of N10, 772,296 as his annual salary. Annual basic salary of the deputy governor is N2,112,215. He also receives N8,448,860 as his vehicle loan. His annual leave is a total of N211,221.50. The state government is responsible for the furniture and accommodation of the deputy governor too.
In the same vein, the medical bill of the deputy governor is footed by the state government. He can be given any amount as foreign currency when he embarks on any foreign trip and he can also be given any amount he requests when he goes on local tour.
