NETFLIX Nigeria: How to Setup & Watch NETFLIX in Nigeria

It’s no news that NETFLIX is now in Nigeria and you can watch thousands of movies for as little as $7.99 a month for its basic plan on your TV, mobile device, Play Station and XBox. If you do not know NETFLIX is the number one online streaming service for movies and TV shows in the world presently and I have a good feeling it would give iROKO TV and DSTV a run for their money.

One problem NETFLIX may face in Nigeria is the affordability of internet connectivity to the average Nigerian as you would need a lot of data bandwidth to really get the best of NETFLIX in Nigeria. However I do believe some Internet Service Providers would come up with some good NETFLIX streaming plans for Nigerians very soon to win over new customers.

How Much Does NETFLIX Cost in Nigeria?

NETFLIX comes with 3 affordable monthly plans Basic, Standard and Premium which cost $7.99, $8.99 and $11.99 respectively and going with the current naira to dollar conversion of $1 to N275 this means that it would cost Nigerians N2,197.25 for the NETFLIX Basic Plan, N2,472.25 for the NETFLIX Standard Plan and N3,297.25 for the NETFLIX Premium Plan respectively.

As you can see from the image below the different packages comes with its own distinct feature like the number of screens you can watch NETFLIX on with the same account and the High Definition option. Also note that High Definition streaming would quickly ZAP your data bundle as it requires more bandwidth to serve you crisp clear quality videos. If you are having a get together and watching movies make sure you get audio visual rental for better sound quality.

Would NETFLIX Work With Slow Internet Connectivity in Nigeria?

One major problem in Nigeria with its various Internet Service Providers (ISP) is the fact that you can hardly get up to 200Kbps on any of their plans and even if you do, they always find a way of tethering the speed of your connection which they refer to as “Fair Usage Policy on their claimed unlimited plans”.

NETFLIX has a recommended download speed for playing movies and TV shows on their service which is listed below.

0.5 Megabits per second – Required broadband connection speed.
1.5 Megabits per second – Recommended broadband connection speed.
3.0 Megabits per second – Recommended for SD quality.

However unlike the other regular streaming service out there that buffers on slow internet connection. NETFLIX has a way of determining your connection speed and serves you the quality that would hardly buffer on the average Nigerian internet connection.

I have facts to prove this as I have used both ETISALAT and MTN data plans to try it out and during the test both connection speed did not exceed 50Kbps and we all know the networks can easily exceed 100kbps when downloading plus this test was done with the NETFLIX Standard plan. 50Kbps cannot be used to stream High Definition Videos but the quality was good enough for me on the Basic Plan.

How to Connect NETFLIX to Your TV in Nigeria

You can watch NETFLIX on several Devices but it won’t be as fun as watching it on your TV connected to your sound system. These days with smart TVs all over the place you can easily connect your Smart TV to your Wi-Fi Modem but if you do not have a Smart TV you can easily use your laptop computer and connect your laptop to your TV via the HDMI cable.

It’s that easy. But if you do have a Play Station or Nintendo gaming machines, you can connect them to the internet and connect your gaming machine to your TV to enjoy NETFLIX’s service. Also there are mobile phones that you can connect directly to your TV by using the right cable if you really need to use your phone to stream.

How to Pay For NETFLIX in Nigeria

To pay for NETFLIX You can simply use your debit card to make payment (Master Card and Visa Card) or use a PayPal account to make payment. Note that the 1st month is free and you can either cancel or let NETFLIX automatically charge you for 1 month after the free one month trial has exceeded its duration. You would need to register and provide payment details before you can enjoy the free one month.

So, gone are the days of masking your identity by using VPNs to fool NETFLIX to appear like you are in USA to use their services.

    • Chima,
This would depend on the stream quality provided by NETFLIX which also depends on your data connection speed.
But for an average good pictured movie i believe you would need around 300MB.
