Previously known as Celtel Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria is one of the major telecoms operators in the country. The company’s predecessor, Econet was the first telecoms operator to launch GSM services in Nigeria in 2001.

Airtel Nigeria is a subsidiary of the BhartiAirtel which is the parent company of Airtel Nigeria. The company is located in India and was founded in 1996 by Sunil Bharti Mittal. Bharti was the first company in India to offer push button telephones when other companies were still using rotary phones.

Bharti launched its telecommunication services in 1995 in Delhi as Bharti Tele-Ventures but it was later rebranded to become Airtel.

Airtel has since grown to become one of India’s largest telecoms operators. It is also said to be the 4th largest operator in the world with a subscriber base of over 250 million subscribers.

In Africa, Airtel Nigeria is a part of the Airtel Africa Group. The group extends its service to 17 countries in the region namely Burkina Faso, Chad, Congo Republic, Niger, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

In 2010, Bhartisecured a deal with another telecoms company, Zainwhich led to the acquisition of the company’s shares in 15 African countries for $8.97 billion. This was the deal that made Airtel the fourth largest mobile telecoms operator in the world. Currently, Airtel is the third largest mobile operator in the world.

Airtel was rebranded in 2010. This was part of a global strategy and one of the effects of the rebranding was the change of the company’s logo and the style of writing the company’s name. Currently, the Airtel name is currently written in lower case. The rebranding was implemented in the Airtel Africa Group in November 2010.

In Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria is currently the third largest operator in the country with over 33 million subscribers as of November 2016. One of their predecessors, Econetalso owns a 5% minority stake in the company.

Airtel is known for its affordable and quality mobile services to Nigerians and over the years, the company has scored many first in Nigeria.
