List of Power Transmission Stations in Nigeria

Power transmission stations in Nigeria are varied right from the inception of electricity in Nigeria. Electricity generation maybe, coal-powered, gas-powered, hydroelectric, or steam-powered. In Nigeria, there exist several power transmission stations. Their locations, as well as their generating capacity, would be presented in this article.

List of Power Transmission Stations in Nigeria

This is a list of power transmission stations in Nigeria:

  • Aba Power Station

This is an Independent Power Plant (IPP) located in Aba, Abia State, with the capacity to produce a total output of 140 megawatts. It operates on a simple-cycle combustion turbine (SCCT).

  • AES Barge (IPP)

This is an Independent Power Plant (IPP) with a total generating capacity of 270 megawatts, located at Egbin, Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

  • Afam I-IV & V Power Station

This power station operates a simple-cycle combustion turbine system with the capacity to generate 977 megawatts. It is located in Afam, Oyigbo, Rivers State.

  • Afam VI Power Station

This is an Independent Power Plant by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) that uses a combined cycle gas technology capable of generating 650 megawatts. It is located in Afam, Oyigbo, Rivers State.

  • Alaoji Power Station

This is a National Integrated Power Project that uses both gas and steam turbines capable of generating 1074 megawatts. It is situated in Abia State.

  • Calabar Power Station

This is a National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) located in the capital city of Cross Rivers State, Calabar. It has an electricity generating capacity of 561 megawatts.

  • Egbema Power Station

This is a National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) operating a simple-cycle combustion turbine capable of generating 338 megawatts of electricity. It is located in Imo State.

  • Egbin Thermal Power Station

This is the largest electricity generating plant in Nigeria and West Africa that operates on a gas-fired steam turbine. It has six 220 megawatts independent boiler turbines capable of generating a combined 1320 megawatts of electricity. It is located in Egbin, Ikorodu, Lagos State. It was commissioned in 1986.

  • Gbarain Power Station (NIPP)

This is a National Integrated Power Project. It has a capacity of 225 megawatts. It is located in Bayelsa State.

  • Geregu Power Station

This is a combustion turbine plant that is capable of generating 414 megawatts of electricity. It is situated at Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

  • Geregu II Power Station

This is a simple-cycle combustion turbine plant situated in Kogi State. It is capable of generating 434 megawatts of electricity.

  • Ibom Power Station

This is an Independent Power Plant (IPP) operating a simple-cycle combustion turbine capable of generating 190 megawatts. The proposed Phase II of the Ibom Power Station is set to generate 500 megawatts. It is located in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State.

  • Ihovbor Power Station (NIPP)

The Ihovbor Power Station is a National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) operating a simple-cycle combustion turbine with the capacity of generating 450 megawatts of electricity. It is set in Benin City, Delta State.

  • Jebba Power Station

The Jebba power station is a hydroelectric-powered station located in Niger State, capable of generating 577 megawatts of electricity.

  • Kainji Power Station Reservoir

Located in Nigeria State, the Kainji power station was constructed between the period of 1964 till 1968 when it was commissioned. $209 million was invested into the construction it the power station. The eight working turbines out of twelve of the power station are capable of generating 760 megawatts.

  • Kwale Okpai Power Station

This is an Independent Power Project (IPP) owned by Agip Oil Company. It is a cycle gas turbine power station with a total output of 480nmegawatts.

  • Olorunsogo II Power Station

This is a National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) capable of generating 675 megawatts using the combined cycle gas turbine. It is located in Oluronsogo, Ogun State.

  • Omoku II Power Station

This is a National Integrated Power Project power station that is connected to the national grid.

  • Omotosho I Power Station

The Omotosho I power station operates on a simple-cycle gas turbine capable of generating 335 megawatts. It was completed in 200. It is located at Omotosho, Ondo State.

  • Omotosho II Power Station

This is a power station using the simple cycle gas turbine. It is capable of generating 450 megawatts.

  • Papalanto Olusorongo I Power Station

This is a simple-cycle combustion turbine power station that is capable of generating 335 megawatts. It is located in Papalanto, Ogun State.

  • Rivers Independent Power Plant

This is an independent Power Station with the capacity to generate 180 megawatts.

  • Sapele Power Plant

This is a National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) that was completed in 2012, that operates on a simple gas cycle turbine. It is located in Sapele, Delta State.

  • Sapele Power Station

The Sapele power station operates on a gas-fired steam turbine and simple gas system with the capacity to produce 1020 megawatts. It was completed in 1981, and it is located in Ogorode-Sapele, Delta State.

  • Shiroro Power Station Reservoir

This is a hydroelectric-powered station capable of generating 600 megawatts of electricity. It was completed in 1990. The power station is in Niger State.

  • Trans-Amadi Power Station

This power station possesses the capacity to generate 136 megawatts. It operates on a gas-fired system. Located in Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

  • Transcorp-Ughelhi Power Station

This power station utilizes a simple cycle gas turbine capable of generating 972 megawatts. The power station is at Ughello, Dela State.

  • Dadin Kowa Hydroelectric Power Plant

This is a project that is proposed to generate 40 megawatts on completion.

  • Zamfara Hydroelectric Power Station

The Zamfara power station reservoir was completed in 2012 and is capable of generating 100 megawatts.

  • Ashama Solar Power Station

This is a proposed electricity power transmission station to be built in Delta State. It is projected to generate 200 megawatts.

  • Itobe Power Station

This is a coal-fired power plant undergoing construction at Itobe, Kogi State. It is expected to generate 1200 megawatts of electricity.

  • Mambilla Power Station

This is a proposed hydroelectric power station proposed to be constructed in Taraba State. It is expected to generate 3050 megawatts on completion.

  • Qua Iboe Power Plant

This is a power plant undergoing construction located in Akwa Ibom. It is projected to generate 540 megawatts.

  • Kano Power Station Reservoir

This is a hydroelectric power station presently being constructed. Upon successful completion, it is expected to generate 100 megawatts.
