  • How to Apply for Passport Renewal on  the Nigerian Immigration Service Portal 

If you have an expired Nigerian passport of any kind, you would find it easy to renew it if you follow the steps below: 

  • Visit the Nigerian Immigration Service portal at https://portal.immigration.gov.ng
  • On the home page, click on “Apply for Passport Renewal” from the “Passport” menu
  • On the next page, select your passport type and choose the processing country where you wish to attend the interview for your passport renewal process, e.g. Nigeria. (For the case of this article, we are going to be using Nigeria as the processing country)
  • Click on “Start Application” to begin the process
  • On the next page, that is the Passport Type page, select “Renew/Reissue Passport” 
  • Next, select your passport type from the “Passport Type” drop-down
  • Next, from the “Change Type” drop-down, select the reason you want to renew your passport. The drop-down includes the following options;  Expired, Page Exhausted, Lost/Replacement Request, and Damaged Passport
  • Input your passport number in the field provided for that information
  • Select your age group from the Age Group drop-down list. The different age groups include 0-17, 18-59, and 60 and above
  • Select a state from the “Processing State” drop-down list you wish to attend the interview for your application process
  • Next, select a convenient option from the “Processing Office” drop-down list
  • Choose either 32 pages or 64 pages from the “Booklet Type” drop-down list 
  • Next, select 5 years or 10 years from the “Validity” drop-down list
  • Click on the “I’m not a robot” reCAPTCHA box, then click on “Continue” to proceed to the second stage of the online registration process which is the Personal Details page. You would see the amount for the renewal of your passport (in naira) 
  • Once the Personal Details page loads, choose if you are a Mr Mrs. or Miss from the “Title” drop-down 
  • Provide your surname in the “Surname” field
  • Next, provide your first name in the appropriate field. 
  • In the “Middle name” field, you may provide your middle name if you wish to. It’s optional
  • Next, provide your date of birth in the appropriate boxes provided for it
  • Then, provide where you were born in the “Place of birth” field
  • Choose either Male or Female in the “Gender” drop-down
  • Select your appropriate marital status from the options provided in the “Marital Status” drop-down
  • In the “Occupation” field, provide what you do for a living  
  • In the “Maiden Name” box, input your maiden name 
  • Next, provide your National Identity Number (NIN) in the NIN field
  • Input your functional email address in the space provided for it
  • Click on “Continue” to proceed to the third stage of the online application process for your passport renewal
  • On the next page that opens up, that is the Contact Information page, you’d see a unique reference number for your application at the top of your screen. You’d have to note down this reference number as it would be used when paying for your passport renewal
  • In the “Hometown/Village” field, provide which village or hometown you’re from 
  • Next, from the “State of Origin” drop-down, select the state you’re from 
  • Supply your current phone number in the “Contact Number” field
  • Next, input your alternative number in the “Additional Number” field
  • Next, supply the required details in the “Permanent Address in Nigeria” section. You’d be required to provide the state where you live, as well as the local government area, city/town, and postal code of your area of residence
  • Click on “Continue” to proceed to the next stage
  • The “Next of Kin Information” is the next page that opens up. On this page, fill and complete the fields provided with the correct details 
  • Tick “I accept full responsibility for the information provided in this form” to proceed
  • An application ID and reference number unique to your application would be generated by the NIS portal
  • Print the acknowledgment form and click on “Continue application”
  • Click Continue
  • Click ”Proceed to online payments”
  • The only authorized payment platforms on the NIS online portal include Innovate1pay, Net Post Pay, Pay Arena, Teasy, and Saana Pay
  • Select any of the authorized payment options from the list and click on “Continue”
  • You have an option of a card or bank payment.
  • Select proceed to payment
  • If you choose the card option, complete the required details. On the other hand, if you choose the bank option; Print the slip for further processing at the bank.  At the bank, you’d make the payment for your passport renewal
  • How to Check the Payment Status of Your Nigerian Passport Renewal

To check the payment status of your passport renewal, follow the following steps below:

  • Visit the Nigerian Immigration Service portal 
  • Navigate to the “Passports” tab on the menu bar, and then click on “Application home” on the menu bar
  • On the menu bar, navigate to the Services Link, and click on “Check Payment Status” from the drop-down list
  • Enter your reference number and the Application ID issued to you when you submitted your application.
  • Choose the correct option for application type and click on “Search Record” 
  • How to Check the Application Status of Your Nigerian Passport Renewal Online 

After you’ve completed your online application and made the payment for your passport renewal, you can track and view your application status online. 

To do this, follow the steps below:

  • Visit the Nigerian Immigration Service website
  • Click on the menu bar and select “Passport”
  • Next, click on “Application Status” 
  • Provide your passport application ID and passport reference number In their respective fields
  • Click on “Submit” to know the status of your application
