How to Apply for Prepaid Meter Online in Lagos

Residents of Lagos State, through Ikeja Electric, Nigeria’s largest electricity distribution company, are offered the opportunity of technological antidote to the bill-payment problems.  Prepaid electricity meters trump the estimated bill-payment as the former works on a debit basis, that is, consumers can purchase power units and be able to conveniently use electrify without the hassle of a bill-payment system.

How to Apply for Prepaid Meter Online in Lagos

This is the procedure to apply for a prepaid meter from Ikeja Electric for residents in Lagos State:

  • Register with Ikeja Electric to Generate Account Number

The first step towards getting a prepaid meter in Lagos State is applying to get a unique account number for the property from Ikeja Electric. The application process involves the customer supplying pertinent information required by Ikeja Electric. Customer personal details such as the name of customer, residential address, type of premises, and the use of such premises, are required to be provided in the Agreement Form of Ikeja Electric. Also, the name, contact details, and valid means of identification of the customer’s employer are required to be provided. Furthermore, a certified electrical engineer or accredited contractor is required to provide information on the load requirement of the property by ascertaining the number of light points ceiling fan, cooker, water heater, air conditioner, and other appliances, on the Agreement Form.

Additional information expected includes GPS coordinate, GPS Latitude, GPS Longitude which is to be provided by a Commercial Officer of Ikeja Electric. Thereafter, a unique account number for the property is provided to the customer after approval by Ikeja Electric. It is important to state that ‘customer’ in this context refers to the individual or enterprise applying for an accredited account number from Ikeja Electric.

  • Meter Asset Providers (MAP) Registration

With the unique account number ready, the next step is the MAP registration which involves a customer with Ikeja Electric engaging in the Know-Your-Customer process with Ikeja Electric. This MAP registration is to be done on the Ikeja Electric website, using this link, http://www.ikejaelectric.com/request-new-connection/.The first step of the MAP registration involves creating a Security Key on the platform, after providing the following information: mobile number, email, and password. With success in creating Security Key on the platform, the next step of the Know-Your-Customer process is to Update the Record. At this stage, the details to fill include, the name of the customer, date of birth of the customer (18 years and above), Bank Verification Number (BVN), Identification Number of any means of identification recognized from the drop-down options, passport, address of the customer, and an uploaded picture of chosen means of identification.

Then, the next step of the procedure is the Settle Debt stage. Here, the debts on the customer’s account with Ikeja Electric is to be settled with either of the following payment plans; full payment, which the customer earns 15%, or three monthly payment installments which the customer earns a 10% discount on the third installments, or part payments to be paid over some time. This payment could be made online or in a recognized bank. After payment is made, and the customer agrees to the Terms and Conditions, the next stage is the Review.

The Review stage is to check out for errors during the prior stages and to confirm bank payments. For bank payments, the customer has to quote the Application Reference Number (ARN) as part of the payment details. Thereafter, the customer is expected to upload confirmation of payment after logging in with the Security details created at the start of the process. After successful submission, the customer waits for approval of the account which takes between twenty-four hours to forty-eight hours.

  • Field Survey

With MAP registration complete, the next step of the procedure in the field survey. The purpose of the field survey is to determine the metre type suitable for the customer’s load. This would determine if the metre would be a Single-Phase metre or a 3 Phase metre. During the field survey, where the customer shares the same service cable with another tenant/apartment, the customer is required to separate the service cable. This separation of cables can be done by a licensed electrician.

  • Metre Payment

After the determination of the type of metre based on the load requirement of the customer’s property, an invoice would be disbursed to the customer for payment. For a Single Phase Prepaid metre, the cost is N48,263.37, while the 3-Phase Prepaid metre is N89,069.33.

  • Metre Installation

After the customer has made payment for the required metre for his property, and subsequent confirmation of payment by Ikeja Electric, the next is the installation of the meter. Usually, it takes about ten working days for the payment for the metre to be confirmed. The metre installation is carried out by officials of Ikeja Electric. The installation thereby connects the customer’s property to the public electricity supply through the prepaid metre.

  • Registration and Activation of EDMI Device

The installed prepaid metre comes with another device called the EDMI box. The EDMI device is a hand-held device that serves as a customer interface unit that is capable of full prepayment functionality. After the metre installation has been properly installed, the EDMI device is to be connected to the prepaid metre. The EDMI device comes with a piece of paper containing the metre number and two token numbers. The metre number is to be inputted into the EDMI device to effect the registration of the device to the metre outside the property. Then to activate the EDMI device, the two twenty-digits token numbers issued alongside metre and EDMI device are entered one after the other into the device. Success prompts on the display interface of the EDMI device indicate the accomplishment of the activation.

With the activation complete, the customer can now be able to purchase power units for consumption through several avenues such as IKEDC API, Quickteller, Buypower.ng, Kudabank, and several other gateways. Now, as electricity Is loaded onto the meter, current flows through it and into the customer’s property.
