Nigerian Stock Exchange Listed Companies

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) is one of the dominant factors influencing the growth of the Nigerian Economy.

In this post, we take a look at the listed companies on the NSE but first let’s take a trip down memory lane.

The origin of the NSE can be traced to the Lagos Stock Exchange (LSE) which was established in 1960.

The LSE began its operations in August 1961 with 19 securities listed for trading but informal operations had commenced earlier in June, 1961

In 1977, the Lagos Stock Exchange became the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Following this change, the NSE established several branches in major commercial cities in the country.

Currently, the NSE has close to 180 companies listed on it with a total market capitalization of about N8.5 trillion. In terms of market capitalization, the NSE is the third largest stock exchange in Africa.

The operation of the NSE is regulated by the Securities & Exchange Commission which helps to forestall breaches of market rules and to deter as well as detect unfair manipulations & trading practices.
