Types of Political Parties in Nigeria

Nigeria is a country blessed with different people with different ideas and beliefs. Nigeria has citizens with different political orientations hence the different political parties. There are many political parties in Nigeria with the All Progressives Congress(APC) and the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) playing the role of the two major political parties In the country. These political parties serve as the middleman between the people and the state. They select suitable candidates and party representatives to run for office in the government, with the interests of the citizens in mind, while promoting the goals and objectives of the party. In this article, the different types of political parties in Nigeria would be addressed.

Types of Political Parties in Nigeria

The types of political parties in Nigeria would be discussed below:

  • Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Nigeria

The Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) is one of the two major political parties in Nigeria. This political party was founded in 1998. The political party’s colours are green, white and red. The Peoples Democratic Party’s slogan is “power to the people”. PDP won every presidential election between 1999 and 2011. This political party was the ruling party in the country until the 2015 presidential elections. The Peoples’ Democratic Party favours economic liberalism and limited government regulation.

  • All Progressives Congress(APC)

The All Progressives Congress(APC) is another political party in Nigeria that is the other major political party aside from the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). The All Progressives Congress(APC) was founded in 2013 after three big opposition parties -the Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN), the All Nigeria Peoples Party(ANPP), and the Congress for Progressive Change(CPC), and also a part of the new PDP and a part of the All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA). In 2015, this political party became the ruling party when the party’s presidential candidate won the presidential elections. The party colours are light blue, green and white. 

  • Labour Party(LP) Nigeria

The Labour Party(LP) is a democratic political party in Nigeria that was created in 2002. The party was formerly called the Party for Social Democracy(PSD). This political party strives to promote and defend social democratic principles and ideals to achieve social justice, unity and progress. The party’s headquarters is located in Abuja, Nigeria. Its colours are red and green. The Labour Party slogan is ” forward ever*. The party got recognition and massive support when the former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi joined the party and became the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 Nigerian presidential election. The green colour in the party’s flag signifies agriculture, while the red signifies transformation. The party’s logo is a wheel with a man and a woman with a child in the middle.

  • All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA)

The All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) is a political party in Nigeria that was formed in 2003. The party’s colours are yellow, white and green. During the 2019 general elections, the All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA), won seven seats in the House of Representatives. This was a huge turnaround for the party as this was a major win compared to the 2015 elections.

  • Social Democratic Party(SDP) Nigeria

The Social Democratic Party(SDP) is a political party in Nigeria. This political party was created along with the National Republican Convention by former military president Ibrahim Babangida. The Social Democratic Party(SDP) was founded in December 1989. Formerly, it was seen as an intermediate party outstanding to young people and socialists. 

  • Young Progressives Party(YPP)

The Young Progressives Party(YPP) is a political party in Nigeria that was founded with the sole aim of contesting against the two major political parties, the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party. The Young Progressives Party(YPP) was founded on the 7th of June, 2017 and it won a seat in the Nigerian Senate in the 2019 general elections. The party’s colours are yellow, red, and green. Its slogan is “service to the people”.

  • African Democratic Congress(ADC)

The African Democratic Congress(ADC) is a political party in Nigeria that was formerly called Alliance for Democratic Change. That was what it was called when the political party was founded in 2005. The party’s name was changed to the African Democratic Congress(ADC) when it was to be registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC). 

  • Accord(Nigeria)

Accord is a social-democratic political party in Nigeria. The party’s colour is green. The political party has its headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. In the 2015 National Assembly elections, the Accord party won one seat in the House of Representatives. The party believes in capitalism, corporatism, and populism.

  • People’s Redemption Party

The People’s Redemption Party is a political party in Nigeria that was founded by supporters of Mallam Aminu Kano when he withdrew from the National Party of Nigeria. The People’s Redemption Party was founded in 1978. The party’s colours are red, white and black. The original party was outlawed after the 1983 military coup that was led by General Muhammadu Buhari. Later, a party resurfaced with the same name but it couldn’t gather momentum like the former party.

  • African Action Congress(AAC)

The African Action Congress(ACC) is a political party that was founded on the 15th of August, 2018 by Omoyele Sowore, who was the party’s presidential aspirant. He was also a publisher at Sahara Reporters. He founded the party because he wanted to contest the 2019 general elections as a presidential candidate. The party’s headquarters is located in Abuja, Nigeria. The party’s slogan is ” take it back action”.

  • Action Democratic Party(ADP)

Action Democratic Party(ADP) is a political party in Nigeria that was founded in June 2017. It was founded by some able-bodied politically inclined people who wanted to battle with the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and the All Progressives Congress(APC). The political party’s colours are red, sky-blue and navy blue. The party’s slogan is ” one destiny”. The party has about 95,512 members nationwide.
