About MTN Nigeria
MTN Nigeria is part of the MTN Group. MTN has grown to be one of Africa’s leading cellular telecommunications company. MTN became the first GSM network to make a call just after the globally lauded Nigerian GSM auction activated by the Nigerian Communications Commission in 2001. This call was made on May 16, 2001. After that, the company launched full commercial operations which began in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.
Activities of the MTN group
In January 2001, MTN paid a sum of $285m for one of four GSM licenses in Nigeria. Currently, an excess of US$1.8 billion has been invested building mobile telecommunications infrastructure in Nigeria. Since MTN launched in August 2001, it has steadily deployed its services across states in Nigeria. The telecommunications company now provides services in 223 cities and towns and more than 10,000 villages and communities and an increasing number of highways across the country. Its services are spread across the 36 states of the Nigeria and Abuja which is the Federal Capital Territory. This includes many villages and communities that are being connected to the world of telecommunications for the very first time.
- In January, 2003, the company’s digital microwave transmission backbone called the 3,400 Kilometre Y’elloBahn was commissioned by President Olusegun Obasanjo. The Y’elloBahn is reputed to be the most extensive digital microwave transmission infrastructure in the continent of Africa. The Y’elloBahn has helped to increase the quality of calls and activities on MTN network.
- The company has succeeded in connecting people, families, friends and opportunities on the on the core brand values of leadership, relationship, integrity, and innovation.
- Just recently, MTN Nigeria expanded its network capacity to include a new numbering range. This new number is with the prefix 0806. This makes MTN the first GSM network in Nigeria to have adopted an additional and new numbering system, having exhausted its initial subscriber numbering range which was 0803.
- In a bid to enhance quality customer service, MTN Nigeria has also introduced a self-help toll-free 181 customer-care line. This line comes free of charge and customers are able to resolve their frequently asked questions.
- MTN helps to deliver on the nation’s economy and development through its provision of world class communications and also through sustainable and innovative corporate social responsibility initiatives.
