In 1964, Ambassador Aduke Alakija established the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA in Nigeria. FIDA is a non-profit and politically-neutral organization made up of practicing women lawyers in Nigeria with the motive of preserving, promoting, and protecting the rights of women and children in Nigeria. Free legal representation of women and children, mediation, and counseling are some of the services rendered by FIDA. To accomplish the goal of protecting, promoting and preserving the rights of men and children, the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, is guided by the principles of transparency, integrity, accountability, commitment, mutual respect and service. The various offices of FIDA across Nigeria seek to establish equality and respect for all peoples, promote the study of comparative law and offer advice to the Government on issues on women and children. To actualize this goal of protection and preservation of the rights of women and children, FIDA offers indigent women and children free legal representation, advocacy campaigns on social ills, education and training of women, and publishing information resources, among others.
