History of Zenith Bank
Zenith Bank was established in May 1990 and began banking operations in July of that same year. When Zenith bank began, it had a capital base of $4 million.
1990 was the year in which the Nigerian government embarked on a policy of liberalization of the banking sector. The central bank granted up to twenty banking licenses yearly to interested investors.
Zenith bank’s first office was a residential house in Victoria Island which was modified into a banking hall. When the bank first began its banking operations, it witnessed a period of rapid growth. When In 1997, Central bank of Nigeria issued a directive for banking institutions to shore up their capital base, Zenith bank increased its capitalization to 500 million nairas.
In 1999, Zenith bank fully embraced the use of the internet for marketing of its financial services. The bank encouraged its customers to bank online. This is how Zenith bank became one of the earliest companies to invest in online banking.
Soon after, Zenith’s profile began to rise and compete with other leading banks in the Nigerian banking industry. This was due to its investments in information technology. This also helped the bank have a wider reach compared to other banks. Zenith bank began to announce net profits comparable to some of the older banks it met in the banking space.
On 17 June 2004, Zenith bank became a public limited company. On the 21st of October 2004, the bank’s shares of the stock were listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE). Other subsidiaries are Zenith Custodian, Zenith Securities and Zenith General Insurance.
