Wema Bank, officially known as Wema Bank Plc is a Nigerian commercial bank. The bank is fully licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the national financial regulatory body in Nigeria. History of Wema bank
Wema Bank was established on the 2nd of May, 1945, as a private limited liability company. At that time, its name was Agbonmagbe Bank Limited. Today, Wema Bank is Nigeria’s longest surviving indigenous bank. In 1945, the bank was granted a commercial banking license and also began its banking activities that same year. In 1987, Wema bank converted to a public limited liability company. In 1990, the bank was listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange where it trades under the symbol: WEMABANK. In February 2001, it was granted a Universal Banking License.
In 2011, Wema bank decided to operate as a commercial bank with a regional scope in the South-South area, South-West area, Lagos and Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.
In accordance with the regulatory requirements of the Central bank of Nigeria for National banking license, Wema bank raised a capital base of over N43,8 billion naira and thus became a national bank. Today, Wema Bank Plc. is a publicly-traded limited liability company, you will find them on the Nigerian Stock Exchange trading under the symbol ‘WEMABANK’.
