List of Trade Unions in Nigeria

Trade unions essentially perform the role of representing the interests of workers in a profession, trade, industry aimed at protection and the advancement of the groups’ interests.  With these trade unions, the group’s benefit, rights and advancement of the industry, profession, occupy the topmost priority.

List of Trade Unions in Nigeria

This is a list of the trade unions that exist in Nigeria:

  • Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)

The Nigeria Labour Congress performs regulatory oversight functions of trade unions that exist in Nigeria. In 1978, the merger of, Nigeria Trade Union Congress (NTUC), Labour Unity Front (LUF), United Labour Congress (ULC), and Nigeria Workers Council (NWC) resulted in the establishment of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

  • Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ)

A network of specialists in the media trade saddled with the responsibility of the advancement of safety and welfare of the Nigerian journalists. It was founded on March 15, 1955.

  • Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG)

Established as a trade union in November 1977 upon the successful merger of seven unions. This trade union essentially represents the interests and rights of workers in the extraction industries in Nigeria.

  • Nigerian Union of Teachers

The Nigerian Union of Teachers essentially focuses on the improvement of the economic situations of teaching professionals and the development of techniques that provide optimum knowledge delivery.

  • National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE)

In 1977 this trade union was formed to represent utility workers In Nigeria after the merger of seven unions.

  • National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW)

The objectives this union seeks to achieve are the social stability of transport workers in the transport sector. This trade union was created in 1978 after the successful merger of other unions. Comrade, Mushin Ayinde Akinsaya (MC Oluomo) presently leads the NURTW.

  • Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN)

Established to regulate and represent the interests of the film actors in Nigeria and abroad.

  • Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)

This trade union was founded in 1978 to cover academic staff in all of the Federal and State Universities in Nigeria.

  • Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN)

This trade union is accountable for representing film and television directors. It was founded in 1999.

  • Nigeria Civil Service

This is a trade union representing workers in the Nigerian Civil Service. In 1978, twenty-two were merged together resulting in the Nigeria Civil Service.

  • National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE)

This is a trade union representing employees in food processing and similar industries in Nigeria. Twenty-five unions were merged by the Federal Government to form the National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees.

  • National Union of Civil Engineering, Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers (NUCECFWW)

This trade union is a merger of the Nigeria Union of Construction and Civil Engineering Workers and the National Union of Furniture, Fixtures and Woodworkers established in 1996 to represent the interests of workers of various related industries in Nigeria.

  • National Union of Hotel and Personal Service Workers (NUHPSW)

This is a trade union with the purpose of representing workers in the hospitality industry formed as a result of the merger of several unions in 1978.

  • National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees (NUPTG)

Created in 1978 after the merger of seven unions with the core role of representing workers in the communication industry in Nigeria.

  • National Union of Shop and Distributive Employees (NUSDE)

This is a trade union formed in 1978 from the merger of several unions with the responsibility of fostering the welfare and concerns of employees of retail and distributive industries in Nigeria.

  • National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN)

Established in 1977 when thirty-seven several unions merged to form the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria.

  • National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Employees (NUCFRLANMPE)

This is a trade union representing workers in several industries in Nigeria formed in 1996 after the successful merger of the Footwear, Leather and Rubber Products Workers’ Union of Nigeria with the National Union of Chemical and Non-Metallic Product Workers.

  • National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE)

This is a trade union posed with the function of catering for the interests of workers in the financial industry in Nigeria. It was formed in 1978 after the Federal Government merged eight unions together.

  • Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN)

A trade union was formed in 1978 to represent medical workers in Nigeria. It is a merger of seventeen unions.

  • Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN)

This trade union was established in 1996 as the Federal Government merged Dockworjers’ Union, Nigerian Union of Seamen and Water Transport Workers, and Union of Shipping, Clearing and Forwarding Agencies Workers of Nigeria.

  • National Association of Nigeria Nurses, and Midwives (NANNM)

On December 8, 1977, six unions were merged to form the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives with the core responsibility of representing the interests of nurses and midwives in Nigeria.

  • Agricultural and Allied Employees Union of Nigeria (AAEUN)

This is a trade union representing the interests of agricultural workers in Nigeria. It was established in 2008 with the merger of the Agricultural and Allied Workers’ Union of Nigeria and Allied Senior Staff Association.

  • Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN)

This is a trade union founded in 1977 when the Nigeria Government merged twelve unions together. This trade union represents all senior civil servants employed by the Federal and State Governments of Nigeria.

  • Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE)

Set up in 1996 to represent public sector workers in Nigeria.

  • Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE)

This is a trade union representing the municipal workers in Nigeria. Several unions were merged together in 1978 to produce the NULGE.

  • Petroleum and National Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN)

This trade union was established in 1979 to cater for the interests of upper and mid-level employees of the petroleum and gas industry in Nigeria. It is charged with safeguarding the welfare of workers in that sector.
