Functions of the National Universities Commission (NUC)
The core functions of the Commission are outlined below:
- The commission is given the responsibility to grant approval for all academic programmes in operation in every Nigerian University
- Grant approval for the establishment of all institutions of higher learning offering degree programmes in nay Nigerian University

- The NUC acts as the external support to all Nigerian Universities
The Admission Department of the NUC performs the following functions based on the enabling act establishing the Board that is (Act) No. 2. These functions are:

– Vacancies available in each Tertiary Institution
– The candidate’s preference for certain institutions or courses
- Implementing the guidelines for Admission as stated and approved by the proprietor of the learning institutions and other relevant Authorities to be considered
- Gathering and distributing of information on all issues related to admissions
- Annual preparation of Committee meeting centred around Policy on admission
- Reviewing and Updating of Brochure
- Distributing of admission documents such as print-outs/Direct Entry application etc.
The NUC also performs the following roles:
- Review and develop a syllabus for the UTME
- Recruit and supervise item writers and moderators
- Arrange for the trial-testing and moderation of items to be used in UTME examination.
Functions of the National Teachers Institute (NTI)
The institute is mandated by law to perform the following functions:
- Upgrade under-qualified and untrained teachers via training and workshops.
- Conduct post-graduate courses and examinations in education for graduate teachers.
- Provide what is called refresher and other upgrading courses as trainings for improvement for teachers.

NECO is responsible for the organization of the following examinations:
- National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE)
- Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)
- Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)
Functions of National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB)
NABTEB is responsible for the conduct of examinations which lead to the award of the following certificates:
- National Business Certificate (NBC)
- National Technical Certificate (NTC)
- Advanced National Business Certificate (ANBC)
- Advanced National Technical Certificate (ANTC)
Other roles performed by the institute are:
- Handling all issues related to the conduct of Technical and Business examinations which before its establishment was handled by the Royal Society of Arts, London, City and Guilds of London and the West African Examinations Council
- Handle issues related to results and certificates awarded to those who write examinations conducted by the Board
- Conduct other specific examinations in collaboration with or on behalf of other agencies or examination boards such as the London Chamber of Commerce or the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria etc.
- Conduct entrance examinations into Allied Institutions and Technical Colleges
- Supervise, collate and maintain updated records of assessment in Technical Colleges and Allied Institutions for the award of in National Business and Technical Examinations

Functions of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN)
The Council was established by Decree 31 of 1993 to perform the following functions
- Determining through a selective process those who are teachers for the purpose of this Act.
- Determining the standards of knowledge and skills to be met and attained by those seeking to be registered teachers under Act CAP T3 of 2004
- Improving on these standards from time to time as required.
- Maintaining an updated register of teachers and the publishing a list of these names from time to time.
- Regulating the operations of all areas of the teaching profession
- Categorizing members of the teaching profession according to their level of training and qualification from time to time.
