History of Standard Chartered Bank
The Standard Chartered bank is globally recognized with a presence in major countries of the world, including Nigeria. Standard Chartered Bank in Nigeria began with the merging of Standard Bank of South Africa with the Bank of West Africa in 1965. This meant that the Standard Bank of South Africa had acquired a banking operation in Nigeria, the name was then changed to Standard Bank of West Africa. Four years after this merger, in 1969, Standard Bank, Nigeria was incorporated locally to operate and mage business in Nigeria.
Standard Chartered Operations
In 1971, 13% of the share capital of Standard Chartered, Nigeria was placed with Nigerian investors. After the Nigerian civil war, dating from 1967-1970, there were lots of consequences for the Nigerian economy, therefore, the military government sought to increase local control of the retail banking sector. This led to a reduction of the bank’s investment in Standard Bank Nigeria (which was now renamed First Bank of Nigeria). Since that time till 1996, Standard Chartered remained a shareholder of First Bank of Nigeria.
Standard Chartered re-entered Nigeria in 1999. It was opened for business in 1999 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Standard Chartered Bank Plc with its headquarters in the United Kingdom. Standard Chartered, Nigeria offers a wide range of financial services. The bank has employed over 900 staff and has 22 branches in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja.
