History of Stanbic IBTC Holdings
Stanbic IBTC Holdings PLC. came into existence when two banks, Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited and IBTC Chartered Bank Plc were merged in 2007.
Before the Merger happened
IBTC Chartered Bank Plc
Investment Banking & Trust Company Plc (IBTC) was established on the 2nd of February, 1989 (as an investment bank). The Chief Executive officer at the time was Atedo N.A. Peterside.
However, when the Central Bank of Nigeria announced its re-capitalization program for commercial banks in 2005, this meant changes for commercial banks. All commercial banks were obliged to have a minimum capital base of 25 billion naira. The re- capitalization program of the CBN led to the merger of Investment Banking and Trust Company (IBTC) with Chartered Bank Plc and Regent Bank Plc on the 19th of December, 2005. The merge formed the IBTC Chartered Bank Plc which at the time has a total asset base NGN 125 billion.
Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited[edit]
Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited was founded in 1991 when Standard Bank Investment Corporation (Stanbic Bank), acquired the African operations of ANZ Grindlays Bank. The name of the company was later changed to Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited and was listed as a wholly owned subsidiary of Stanbic Africa Holdings Limited (SAHL).
Again, IBTC Chartered Bank Plc merged with Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited on the 24th of September 2007. Later on, the business name was changed to Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc and resumed trading on the NSE.
