History of Stanbic IBTC
Stanbic IBTC Holdings PLC. came to be as a result of a merger between Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited and IBTC Chartered Bank Plc. in 2007. In 2012, the group then adopted a holding company structure in order to comply with the revised regulatory framework as suggested by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The Central bank of Nigeria required that banks either divest from non-core banking financial services or adopt a holdings company structure.

IBTC Chartered Bank Plc
Investment Banking & Trust Company Plc, popularly known as IBTC was formed as an investment bank on the 2nd of February, 1989. The Chief Executive officer of IBTC was Atedo N.A. Peterside. In 2005, the Central Bank of Nigeria announced its re-capitalization program for Nigerian commercial banks. This meant that all commercial banks had to have an NGN 25 billion minimum capital base before they could be allowed to keep operating. This prerequisite by the Central Bank led to the merge of Investment Banking and Trust Company (IBTC) with Chartered Bank Plc and one other, Regent Bank Plc on the 19th of December, 2005 to form IBTC Chartered Bank Plc.
IBTC Chartered bank began with a total asset base of NGN 125 billion and was also listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited
Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited was established in 1991. The bank was formed when Standard Bank Investment Corporation (Stanbic Bank), acquired the African operations of ANZ Grindlays Bank. Its name was later changed to Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited.
The Merger of IBTC Chartered Bank Plc and Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited
On the 24th of September 2007, IBTC Chartered Bank Plc merged with Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited. Stanbic Africa Holdings Limited offered to acquire additional IBTC shares so it could have majority shares in the merged business. After some time, the business name was changed to Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc and began trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange market.
Currently, the stock of Stanbic IBTC Holdings is listed on the NSE, where it trades under the symbol: STANBIC
