Skye Bank is a popular Nigerian bank that will always be remembered for its popular jingle, I wish. Skye banks is one of the banks that emerged after the Central bank of Nigeria ordered the N25 billion recapitalization in 2005.

The history of Skye bank
In 1989, a bank called Prudent Bank Plc., was incorporated as a limited liability company. In 1990, the bank was issued a license as a merchant bank. In 1990, Prudent Bank Plc. was re-branded as Prudent Merchant Bank Limited. In 2006, Prudent Merchant Bank Limited merged with four other banks to form Skye Bank Plc. These four other banks are:
- Bond Bank Limited
- EIB International Bank Plc.
- Reliance Bank Limited
- Co-operative Bank Plc.
In January 2011, Skye bank Plc. introduced a Naira-denominated MasterCard debit card, called “MasterCard Verve”, which was the first of its kind in Nigeria. The bank also offered Internet banking and mobile banking to its customers. In 2014, Skye bank acquired Mainstreet Bank Limited. At this time, the bank was still doing well for itself.
However, Skye bank’s problems began after it used short-term funds to buy local lender Mainstreet Bank in 2014. After acquiring Mainstreet bank, Skye bank failed to raise fresh cash. Although the bank has planned to raise capitals by engaging with shareholders and investors, however its plans were suspended due to weak oil prices which hit the capital markets and drove foreign investors away.
Withdrawal of Skye bank’s license
On 21 September 2018, Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria announced that the Central bank of Nigeria had revoked the operating license of Skye Bank. It was also announced that the assets and liabilities of the bank would be taken over by a new entity, Polaris Bank. Polaris bank was appointed as a bridge bank to take over Skye’s assets and liabilities.
This is because the shareholders of Skye Bank were unable to adequately recapitalize the bank after the 2016 intervention.
Polaris Bank was established by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on September 21, 2018. Its responsibilities include offering commercial banking services to the Nigerian public. The bank commenced services on the same day, after purchasing the assets, and assuming certain of the liabilities, of the defunct Skye Bank. Polaris Bank Limited has since then maintained an interlinked branch network of over two hundred and sixty (260) branches of the defunct Skye bank in all states of Nigeria. Polaris bank also maintains Skye bank’s headquarters at Number 3, Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
With over 350 branches found in every corner of the country, Polaris Bank prides itself on its delivery of top-notch ICT solutions via exceptional customer experience.
