Marriage registries perform statutory marriages as regulated by the Nigerian Marriage Act, Cap 218, Laws of the Federation, 1990. The kind of marriage recognized under the Marriage Act is a monogamous union between a man and a woman. There are marriage registries that are scattered over the local governments, as well as seven Federal marriage registries for the purpose of statutory marriage celebrations.
