List of Federal Medical Centers in Nigeria & Details

The health sector of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is divided into three which are Teaching hospitals, Federal Medical Hospitals and Speciality hospitals which are sanitized by the local biohazard cleanup contractor.

In Nigeria, it is the function of the Local Governments to provide primary healthcare services, while the state Government provides secondary health care services and tertiary health care is provided by the Federal Government.

Based on this operation, the Nigerian Federal Government made a move to establish at least one tertiary health institution in each State of the Federation. These health institutions are called Federal Medical Centres (FMCs). They were established all around the nation especially in states where Federal University Teaching Hospitals were not yet present. Lagos State, however, has a Federal Medical Centre in addition to a Teaching Hospital.

List of Federal Medical Centers in Nigeria

There are 22 FMC’s in Nigeria. Most of these centres are located in the state capital especially in states where the health institution provided by the state government is not enough to meet the needs of the people.

Different types of Hospitals in Nigeria

·        General Hospitals

General Hospitals are very common in towns and cities. Usually, General Hospitals are big in terms of structure, either occupying a single big building or a couple of blocks. General Hospitals offer treatment for any kind of illness or injury. Whenever they are faced with conditions which are more than they can handle are brought to them, they refer to other hospitals. General Hospitals in Nigeria have equipment for carrying out operations and wards for patients even in emergency situations. A typical General Hospital also has many units such as the pharmacy unit, medical laboratory etc.

Staffs of general Hospitals include physicians, doctors, specialist, pharmacist(s), nurses, medical laboratory scientist etc.

Facilities

Most general hospitals have between 50 – 100 beds for in-patients. They may also have an ambulance for rescue operation.

·        Central Hospital

A Central hospital is oftentimes an offshoot of a general hospital. Central hospitals have bigger structures and advanced units than in General hospitals. Where a general hospital may have only a single room for its pharmacy with only one pharmacist employed, a central hospital may have five units for its pharmacy and employ the services of many experienced pharmacists.  Central hospitals also offer advanced level intensive care. While the staffs employed in a Central hospital are usually the same as that of a General Hospital, more specialists of particular fields are employed.

Central hospitals may also be affiliated with medical schools, nursing schools, or allied health professions training programs.

·        Teaching Hospitals

Teaching hospitals are the primary training centres for physicians and student doctors in Nigeria. You will find pharmacy interns and residents working under the supervision of experienced physicians or pharmacists. Many of the physicians employed in Teaching hospitals hold a teaching position at the university affiliated with the hospital.

When one gets to a teaching hospital, it is common to see medical students and residents attend to patients. This could be a turn off to some patients who are offended that their medical condition is being exposed to anyone other than the doctor in charge, or that their situation will not be handled properly. However, it usually cannot be avoided.

Teaching hospitals offer an even higher and advanced form of medical care than that of Central hospitals.

Staffs employed are all specialists in different fields with many years of experience. This is same with the pharmaceutical units.

Teaching hospitals have equipment used in diagnosis, operations and treatment. Some Teaching hospitals like the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara has a landing spot for aeroplane ambulance aside a  car ambulance.

Most of the teaching hospitals in Nigeria were built with the intention of affiliation with Universities which are also usually owned by the Federal Government.

These are Federal Government-owned hospitals that are scattered across the states of the country. Their operations and services are similar to those of central hospitals. Many of the Federal Medical Centres are located in state capitals.·

Federal Medical Centres

·        Specialist Centres

These are known as chronic care facilities. Specialist hospitals are those that treat just one condition. As the name infers, they are called specialist hospitals because they know about the particular condition they claim very well. A specialist hospital employs the service of specialists in the particular field they claim. For example, a hospital for the eye will employ the services of an ophthalmologist. While some of the specialists like LASIK Fort Worth will know how to treat glaucoma, some others will handle cataract, myopia, etc.

Other types of hospitals include:

Maternity/Paediatric Hospitals

Prison Hospitals , prescribing vitamins for eyes and other eye conditions.
