Cashew nuts are highly nutritional. The kernel is loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals beneficial to health.
According to a study by the International Trade Centre, Geneva, Switzerland, cashew nuts are rich in mono-unsaturated, fatty acid which is very good for the heart.
Currently, the global production of raw cashew nuts, RCN, exceeds 2.1 million tons valued at nearly US $2 million, which corresponds to a quarter of the world’s edible nuts production.
Cashew nut kernels are mainly used on the European market as roasted and salted snack. Also, food industries use cashew nuts in cookies, cereals and as topping on ice cream.
The umbrella body in charge of regulating the cashew industry in the country is the National Cashew Associaton of Nigeria (NCAN).
In Nigeria, cashew is grown in 19 states; Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Niger, Nassarawa, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Taraba and Kwara.
Interestingly, cashew nuts can be grown in almost all the states of Nigeria. The annual production of cashew nut in Nigeria is 150,000 tons. Nigeria is the largest producer of cashew nuts in Africa and seventh in the world.
In 2011, Vietnam imported over $140 million worth of raw cashew nuts and $46 million worth of cashew kernel from Nigeria. In recent years, demand has been on the increase against the increasing output of production of 150,000 and 130,000 metric tons in 2014 and 2013 respectively.
35% of the global RCN output is harvested in Africa. However, the processing takes place mainly in India, Vietnam and Brazil. Only 10% of the African RCN is locally processed.
