Why Governors Were Absent from Presidential Campaign Council Meeting – Oshiomhole (January 11, 2019)
APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, has revealed why the governors elected on the platform of the party were absent at the presidential campaign council meeting.
According to Oshiomhole, the governors were absent because they were attending to political activities in their respective states. The former governor of Edo also noted that meeting was convened to discuss the activities and calendar of campaigns capturing various interests group within the country The national chairman of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has said the 24 governors elected under the platform of the party stayed away from the inaugural meeting of the presidential campaign council simply because “they are governors.”
Here is an excerpt of his statement below:
“Don’t forget that elections are not defined in Abuja, it will take place in the 36 states and I am sure there are APC members who are campaigning for the House of Assembly, various federal house and senate constituencies, governorship constituencies. “So it will not be helpful to bring them to Abuja. Here, it is about policies, it will be consummated and translated to practice across the 36 states, 774 local governments and wards.”
Oshiomhole also spoke about the challenges in the countries and explained that a lot of progress has been made when you compare where the government was coming from and where they are currently. He said the APC needs to constantly remind Nigerians of what happened in the last 16 years and what has changed over the past three and a half years. He also opined that even more will happen over the next four years if the APC led government is given the mandate to continue.
He likened the situation to the business of construction and revealed that it is even more challenging. Unlike the process of building a new house, the country is operating in a much more difficult terrain. He spoke about the government being saddled with the responsibility of repositioning an economy that has been so battered. He recalled how the previous administration borrowed money even in the face of surplus budgeting. He stated that if you look at the budget of five to ten years ago, you will find that almost the entire earnings of the government went into the current expenditure which is why this government with lower revenue is spending more on infrastructure. Oshiomhole also said the APC has “enough message” for Nigerians but are facing the challenge of communication due to the varying degrees of literacy.
Violence: Rein-In Your Men Now, PDP Tells APC, Police (January 10, 2019)
The People’s Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organization (PPCO) accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Police of fomenting crises and violent attacks against its members and cautioned that Nigerians may no longer continue to tolerate such incendiary acts ahead of the elections.
The PPCO particularly condemns in totality, Wednesday’s unwarranted attack and use of brute force, including the firing of tear gas by the Police against thousands of law-abiding members of the PDP in Gumel, Jigawa state, on the instigation of agents of Buhari Presidency and the APC to forcefully stop our rally in the state. The PPCO equally condemns the unprovoked invasion and violent attack on the Ondo state campaign office of the PDP presidential candidate, Abubakar Atiku, by armed thugs sponsored by the APC.
This is in addition to series of other attacks by the APC and the police, including arresting and detaining our members on trumped-up charges, as well as pulling down our campaign materials in various states of the federation. It is now clear that the Buhari Presidency, having realized that their smear campaigns against the party and the Presidential candidate cannot change the resolve by Nigerians to rally behind the party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has now resorted to physically attacking and unleashing violence against our members.
According to the PDP, the Buhari Presidency had to deploy brute force to disrupt our rally in Jigawa state when it realized that the rally will amplify and reinforce President Buhari and APC’s rejection, particularly in their supposed stronghold, the North West. Police now have the order to harass, intimidate and unleash violence on our members in a bid to intimidate and instil fear in our people across the nation This informed the ferociousness exhibited by the police in the Jigawa attack where many PDP members were manhandled, injured and traumatized by armed policemen despite the fact that our party obtained official permission from the Police and the Directorate of State Services (DSS) for the rally. Moreover, we have it on good authority that the attack on our Presidential campaign office in Ondo was coordinated by the APC, which is now in frenetic mode over the soaring popularity of our party and Presidential candidate in the South West geo-political zone.
The PPCO invites Nigerians and the international community to note this dangerous dimension, which holds an ominous sign that the 2019 election is already under siege by the Buhari Presidency and the APC, who have now listed the Police as an instrument of terror against Nigerians. The APC and Buhari Presidency is putting security agencies, particularly, the police, on a collision course with the citizens and this portends great danger to our democracy and corporate existence as a nation, as Nigerians will never succumb to any instrument of intimidation.
