History of Union bank

The history of Union bank goes way back to 1836 when a group of investors, the London bankers and British merchants obtained a royal charter from William IV to operate banking activities in the Caribbean. This was how Colonial bank was established. In 1917, Colonial bank extended its operations to Nigeria.

Banking operations of Union bank started with banking centres in Lagos, Jos and Port-Harcourt. Then in 1918, banking operations were extended to other areas such as Ebute-Metta, Onitsha, Ibadan, Kano and Zaria. All the while, Colonial’s banking activities also covered other cities in British West Africa such as Accra and Freetown.

In 1925, Barclay’s bank acquired Colonial Bank, which then caused a name change, that is Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas) and later, Barclays Bank (DCO).

Between 1925 and 1950, the Great Depression and World War II obstructed the operations of the bank. However, the bank continued to operate, opening a few branches but also closing some.

As of 1950, the bank increased its operations in Nigeria which led to a total of 41 branches.

In 1969, Barclays Bank DCO was incorporated in Nigeria, under the name ‘Barclays Bank of Nigeria Limited’, to comply with new banking laws which were enacted in 1968 in the country.

In 1971, the shares of Barclays Bank of Nigeria Limited were listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. After which 8.33% of the bank’s shares were offered to Nigerians. In 1972, the Federal Government of Nigeria acquired 51.67% ownership of the bank, leaving Barclays Bank Plc. of London with 40% ownership. However, the 40% ownership of Barclays Bank plc was sold to Nigerian individuals and businesses. The name of the bank was then changed to Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, to reflect its new ownership structure.

In 1993, the Federal Government of Nigeria completely relieved itself of its ownership in the bank. Union Bank of Nigeria Plc. has gone on to acquire other banks such as the former Universal Trust Bank Plc and Broad Bank Limited.
