Pharmacy can be simply described as the science and use of drugs. It has to do with the practice of formulating, preparing, prescribing, and reviewing drugs, so as to ensure that drugs prescribed are safe, effective, and affordable. Pharmacy has close ties with the health sciences and natural sciences. \u00a0Pharmacy is a five Year programme. It also deals with drug administration, drug performance, interactions, dispensing of prescribed medication and drug supplies to the consumers.<\/p>\n Pharmaceutical Chemistry: This is the aspect of pharmacy that studies the structure and properties of chemical substances (natural or synthetic) used in medicine. It also studies the relationship of these structures to biological activity.<\/p>\n Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology: This is concerned with the art and science of preparing medicines from natural sources such as plants, animals, minerals, microorganisms etc and synthetic sources. It also has to do with finding the suitable materials for use of medicine preparation in the treatment and prevention of diseases.<\/p>\n Pharmacognosy: This is the study and application of physical and physicochemical properties of substances used in medicine for the formulation and production of medicinal products. This is in addition to meeting other minimum University entry requirements such as appropriate screening exercises for candidates.<\/p>\n Students seeking admission via Direct Entry are admitted into the four-year programme. Such candidates must have obtained the following requirements:<\/p>\n A pass in Chemistry, Physics and Biology or Botany or Zoology at the Higher School Certificate (Principal Level), in addition to credit passes in English language and Mathematics in (SSCE) Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent.<\/p>\n Candidates with passes at the Advanced Level should must have been obtained the biological sciences at not more than two sittings.<\/p>\n A candidate who already holds a first degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in the biological sciences or medical sciences such as veterinary medicine may be admitted via direct entry.<\/p>\n Candidates seeking admission via direct entry into 200 level of the Pharmacy programme must in addition to the requirements above, have obtained credit passes in the following: \u00a0Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, at the GCE \u201cA\u201d Level or HSC. Results must be obtained at not more than two sittings.<\/p>\n Ensure you find out the admission requirements for the particular school you are interested in.<\/p>\n Students of Pharmacy have career prospects in various branches of practice in the profession of Pharmacy.
