The University took off from a temporary site, made up of three blocks of building meant for a primary school in Gwagwalada in 1990. In the same year, the University was allocated an expanse of land covering over 11,800 hectares along the Abuja – Abuja road for the development of its main campus.

The Gwagwalada campus is often called the mini Campus although the University has since relocated to its permanent site. However, the campus still hosts two female hostels and a boy’s hostel all accommodating close to three thousand students.

Currently, the University operates from both its Main Campus, along Abuja Airport Road, and the Mini – Campus in Gwagwalada. The Mini campus is the location of the Faculties of Education, Social science, and Law while the main campus houses the Administrative Building, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Management Science, and the Faculty of Arts are located on the Main Campus. Also, it is still expected that more faculties to will relocate to the Main Campus from Gwagwalada in due course.

The distance learning offices of the University are located in Garki where contact sessions of the programme are also held.

The University runs as a dual-mode university with the mandate to run conventional and distance learning programmes. Academic work commenced in 1990.

The motto of the University of Abuja is “For Unity and Scholarship” and the University has two major colours (Green and White). The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Michael Umale Adikwu.
