The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) was founded in 1981. It was established during a time when the government of Nigeria was looking to create universities that specialized in producing graduates with practical as well as theoretical knowledge of technologies. The university is located in Akure, the capital city of Ondo State.

In 2017, Webometrics ranked FUTA among the 10 best universities in Nigeria.

SCOM was recently founded in 2018 to cater to the needs of departments that were more related to computer science than general science. It is located in the Obanla campus of FUTA and it has five subsidiary departments:

  • Information Technology (IFT)
  • Software Engineering (SEN)

FUTA also runs pre-degree science programs, Short-Term courses and University Advanced Basic Science programs.
