The NDA was founded on the 5th of February, 1964 for the purpose of training officers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria in Kaduna.

The academy provides each officer cadet with the skills, knowledge, and values that are needed to meet the requirement of a military officer in Nigeria.  The regular combatant course programme is a 5-year course that trains agile men and women into well-educated, virile, courageous, and erudite subalterns.

At the end of the programme, successful graduates are awarded a Bachelor’s degree and a presidential commission to second lieutenant rank.
