In this post, we have highlighted the science-based courses offered by NOUN. But first, let’s take a quick look at the profile of NOUN.

The University was founded in July 1983 with the mandate to deliver university education at the doorstep of every interested Nigerian. The founding president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari was the first executive president of Nigeria, envisioned a university with the capacity to admit and meet the education and skill needs of citizens no matter their status and circumstances.
However, the school was suspended in 1984 by the Federal Military Government that succeeded Alhaji Shehu Shagari and was eventually resuscitated in 2002 by the civilian regime of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

As an ODL institution, NOUN leverages on Information and Computer Technologies to deliver an education tailored towards the globalized economy. The University offers exceptional academic programmes that meet the specific needs of all sectors of the global economy, in the Arts; Health; Law; Physical, Social, Agricultural and Management Sciences.

The National Open University of Nigeria is the first ODL institution in the West African sub-region. It is Nigeria’s largest tertiary institution in terms of student numbers and is popularly referred to as ‘NOUN’

The National Open University was initially established on 22 July 1983 as a springboard for open and distance learning in Nigeria. It was suspended by the government on 25 April 1984. However, its resuscitation was begun on 12 April 2001 by the former President of Nigeria, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo. At take-off of the university, pioneer student enrollment stood at 32,400. In 2011, NOUN had about 57,759 students.

Currently, NOUN is located in its permanent headquarters in Jabi, Abuja and has over 75 Study Centres throughout the country. The school offers over 50 programmes and 750 courses. All the courses being offered by the university have been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The school offers both undergraduate and postgraduate education.
