Often times, school leavers spend many years trying to gain admission to study medicine in public universities without knowing that there are private universities that offer the same course although it is usually more expensive.

In this post, we have compiled a list of private universities in the country that offer medicine as a course.

But before we go further, here are a few things you should know about studying Medicine at a tertiary institution.

Typically, the program, Medicine and Surgery is offered by the College or Faculty of Medicine. It comprises courses which the students have to pass prior to earning the much-coveted MBBS degree.

The curriculum spans six academic years and is divided into three stages. First, there is the pre-medical stage which is essentially natural and pure science-based. The next stage is the pre-clinical stage in which the basic medical science courses are taught. And the final stage is the clinical stage in which the courses focus on the nature of diseases with the systematic instructions in medicine.

College of Medicine, Afe Babalola University

The Afe Babalola University was established in 2009 and the institution has one of the best private medical schools in the country.

The vision of the Afe Babalola College of Medicine and Health Sciences is to produce doctors that are able to function effectively as general practitioners (able to deal with common health conditions that are presented in general health care settings), empowered to appreciate and utilize opportunities for self-learning and professional development, sufficiently prepared and motivated for the possibility of specialist and academic postgraduate training.

The College has separate departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology. The centre features a well-stocked library with up to date books and journals in the library for both basic medical sciences and clinical sciences.

Additionally, there are two E-learning libraries in the College with a 150 sitting capacity each with access to large numbers of books and journals.

Apart from Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), the medical programs offered by the University include:

Babcock University was one of the first private universities to establish a medical school in Nigeria. The medical school is named after the notable neurosurgeon, Benjamin S. Carson.

Bingham University also has a College of Medicine. The Medicine and Surgery program is a Bachelor Degree program and the admission requirements are highlighted below:

Five WASSCE Credit Passes In English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry And Biology. Also, you need a high score in UTME and the UTME Subjects are Physics, Chemistry and Biology

If you decide to go the direct entry route, you need ‘A’ Level Passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology in addition to the standard UTME Requirements

The Medical School also offers B.Sc. Anatomy and B.Sc. Physiology programs.

College of Medicine, Bowen University

Located in Osun state, Bowen University also has a Department of Medicine in which is accredited by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

Additionally, Bowen University offers training in the Department of Family Medicine for postgraduate students and this department is fully accredited by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

College of Medicine and Health Science, Gregory University

Gregory University was established in 2012 as a private university and the school is located in Uturu, Abia State in Nigeria. The university offers a MBBS degree alongside other medical courses. Below is a list of the other medical programmes:

School of Medicine at Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO)

Igbinedion University is one of the first private institutions in the country. The university is located in Okada city, Edo state and the medical school is in the same vicinity.

Since 1999, the medical school of the university has produced over 1,500 medical doctors. The College of Health Sciences is the most popular department of the institution. In addition to its MBBS program, the school provides degree programmes in:

College of Medicine in Madonna University, Elele

The medical school at Madonna University was established in October 2001 with three departments; Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry and Physiology.

The school was established to train undergraduate medical students in pre-clinical, and prepare them for their future training in clinical medicine.

Since inception, the medical school has enjoyed a steady increase in staff, facilities, student’s enrolment and graduate output. The faculty graduated its first batch of graduates in 2009.

  1. Nile University (Formerly Nigerian Turkis University) in Abuja offer Medicine too.

    They run a state of the heart hospital called Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja as well.
