Katsina is a state located in the North-Western part of Nigeria. Its capital is the city of Katsina. The largest ethnic group in Katsina state is the Hausa people (who are sometimes grouped with the Fulani as Hausa-Fulani). This article covers a list of local government areas in Katsina state.

Bakori

Bakori LGA was created on the 15th of May, 1989 by the then military governor of Katsina State, Major General Lawrence Onoja. According to the 2006 census, Bakori has a population of 641,576 people. It shares boundaries with Funtua LGA to its west, Malumfashi LGA to its north, Danja LGA to its south and Kankara LGA to its east.

Batagarawa

This LGA was established in 1991. The headquarters of Batagarawa LGA are in the town of Batagarawa. The major inhabitants of the LGA are Hausa people. Batagarawa town is the capital of Mallamawa District. According to the 2006 census, Batagarawa has a population of 184,575 people.

Batsari

Its headquarters are in the town of Batsari. According to the 2006 census, Batsari has a population of 208,978 people.

Baure

Baure shares a border with the Republic of Niger. Its headquarters are in the town of Baure. According to the 2006 census, Baure has a population of 197,425 people.

Bindawa

Bindawa has its headquarters in the town of Bindawa. According to the 2006 census, Bindawa has a population of 152,356 people. The LGA has two district head from Bindawa and Doro District.

Charanchi (also spelt as Cheranchi)

Charanchi is both a town and a Local Government Area. As at 2003, the population of Charanchi is approximately 79,000.                                                                        The local government was created in 1996 and was carved out from the former Rimi local government. The LGA has two district heads in the local government.

Dan Musa

Dan Musa has its headquarters in the town of Dan Musa. According to the 2006 census, Dan Musa LGA has a population of 113,691 people.

Dandume (or Dan Dume)

Dandume has its headquarters in the town of Dandume. According to the 2006 census, Dandume has a population of 145,739 people.

Danja

Danja local government area was created on the 27th of September, 1991. This was done after the creation of additional Local Government Areas throughout the country. The headquarters of Danja LGA is Danja Town. Danja LGA was carved out of the former Bakori Local Government Area. The Danja Local Government Area has a very rich fertile land which is very suitable for agricultural activities.

Daura

Daura is both a town and Local Government Area in Katsina State. It is widely regarded as the spiritual home of the Hausa people. The Daura emirate is referred to as one of the ‘seven true Hausa states’

Dutsi

The headquarters of Dutsi are in the town of Dutsi. According to the 2006 census, Dutsi has a population of 120,023 people.

Dutsin-ma

The name Dutsin-ma was actually derived from a hunter’s name. Decades ago, this hunter used to live on the main rock that is located at the heart of the town. The hunter’s name was MA, while rock is Dutsi in Hausa language. People began calling the rock as Dutsin-ma when others started dwelling near the rock due to the availability of water. The headquarters of Dutsin-ma LGA are in the town of Dutsin Ma.

Faskari

Faskari became a Local Government Area in May 1989. It was carved out of Funtua Local Government Area. The area is located in the south-western part of Katsina state. The headquarters of Faskari LGA is Faskari town. As of 2003, the population of the LGA was 125,181 people.

Funtua

Fantua LGA is located in the southern extreme end of Katsina State. Its headquarters is in the town of Funtua. It is one of the first local governments that was created after the 1976 Local Governments reforms in Nigeria. It is also the headquarters of the Katsina South senatorial district. Funtua is the second largest city in Katsina state after the city of Katsina.

Ingawa

The headquarters of Ingawa are in the town of Ingawa. Ingawa became a Local Government in May 1989.

Jibia is located along the Nigerian border with the Republic of Niger

Kafur

Its headquarters are in the town of Kafur.

Kaita

Kaita LGA shares a border in the north with the Republic of Niger. Its headquarters are in the town of Kaita.

Kankara

Kankara has its headquarters in the town of Kankara.

Kankia (also known as Kankiya)

Its headquarters are in the town of Kankia

Katsina

Katsina is both the capital of Katsina state and a Local Government Area. The city is an agricultural area that produces groundnuts. The major inhabitants of the city are the Fulani and Hausa ethnic groups.

Kurfi

Kurfi has its headquarters in the town of Kurfi, near the Gada River. According to the 2006 census, Kurfi has a population of 117,581 people.

Kusada

Its headquarters are in the town of Kusada. The major ethnic groups in Kusada LGA are Hausa and Fulani. The major occupation of its residents is farming and cattle rearing.

Its headquarters are in the town of Mai’Adua

Malumfashi

Its headquarters are in the town of Malumfashi. According to the 2006 census, Malumfashi has a population of 182,920 people.

Mani

Its headquarters are in the town of Mani. Mani town has been in existence for more than 600 years. Mani Local Government was created in 1976 after the enactment of the Local Government reforms act.

Mashi

Its headquarters are in the town of Mashi.

Matazu

Its headquarters are in the town of Matazu.

Musawa

Its headquarters are in the town of Musawa.

Rimi

Its headquarters are in the town of Rimi. According to the 2006 census, Rimi has a population of 153,744 at the 2006 census.

Tsagem is a ward head in Mani Local Government, Katsina State. It is situated in the northern part of Mani town. It is a predominantly Fulani village. The main occupation is farming and animal rearing.
